    Ears

We've had some hassles with DD's ears over the last month or so, with recurring ear infections.

First time, she ran high temps all night and hardly slept, got in to GP and yep, infected right ear. She hadn't tugged on her ear at all, just the high temp. She had a bad reaction/severe tummy upset to the AB, GP took her off them after a day, checked her ear said it was on the mend and to see how we went.

Almost 2 weeks later she was just such a grump. No temps, no tugging on ear, sleeping okay, just seemed in a foul mood. I took her to the GP just in case and yep, left ear was now infected, right ear clear. Diff AB's, no reaction, did the repeat just in case, all seemed fine.

Today we go in to have her 12 month appt and I asked them to check just to be sure that her ears are okay, and both are infected! She has not had any temps, been in any way indicating they are sore, sleeping fine, ravenous appetite, in no way did I really think they'd be infected.

So we now have ear drops (which will be fun to get in I'm sure!) and hoping this clears it up.

This has all been the first time she's been sick or on meds, so we've been lucky so far, I guess I'm asking if there's anything else I can do that could help clear it up for good?

We have only made it to 3 swimming lessons this term due to the infections, could it be the pool? We did go last week for the first time in ages, we won't be going this week though. It's really hard to know they are infected if she does not appear unwell in any way.....

My DS had constant ear infections so much so that he had to have his ear drum reconstructed when he was 4. He used to get them all the time specialy after swimming so we used ear plugs and a band that went round his head to hold them in when swimming and also in the bath. DS used to not show symtoms either he just would go a bit quiet so off to the doctor we went.

    Ear infectons suck!

My DD2 was the same. Must have been having regular ear infections and never any symptoms. First we knew was when she had a whole lot of gunk in her ear one morning about 18 months and it turns out she'd perforated the ear drum. My DH works with an ENT surgeon who immediately said "she'll have glue ear" and yep, she did. Apparently if there's a lot of fluid behind the drum, it minimises a lot of the symptoms of the ear infections. Got some AB's into her which cleared it up but a month later it was back. We decided to go with the option of grommets straight away as it appeared that it was a persistent issue. She also had her adenoids out at the time and we haven't had any further problems. We had to use the ear plugs and head band for swimming until the grommets were out but 12 months later we've had the all clear, it hasn't appeared to have affected her hearing. My suggestion would be to get a referral to an ENT if it keeps happening. Constant ear infections can lead to ongoing hearing problems if not treated. DD2 has always had very waxy ears which obscure the drums - even though she'd had them checked at the normal health checks, they'd never picked it up.

Thanks PO5 and 2 girls...... you know the GP mentioned last week (I got her to sneek a look to confirm they were clear during DH's appt) that one of them was quite waxy. I guess we just have to keep a close eye on it and if in any doubt, have her checked.

Ear drops sure are fun with 1yr olds aren't they?!

My DD2 had constand ear and or sinus infections from the age of 7 months til 16 months, we averaged one a month! it took 8-9 infections/glue ear incidents for the GP to even give us a referal for an ENT to get grommets, we saw him the following week and grommets in 5 days later. believe me they dont just jump in and do them!!
DD hardly ever had a temp with her ear infections, our main sign was non sleeping.
she continued her swimming lesson and now wears ear plugs and a head band for swimming and we ues fresh tap water and not bath water when we wash her hair.
shs only had 1 infection in 10 months and her grommets are still in, which is great because they dont stay in that long

So DD was diagnosed with glue ear today, the doc did the pressure test thing and there was no movement in the inner ear at all. Apparently there is a real build up of fluid in there We have antibiotics on standby if they rupture over the long weekend, and neither him or the chemist could believe she's so happy and chilled. But then the reading I do says it's painless? The doc said she must be having trouble hearing, and she was blabbing away in his office. She always seems on high volume, and he said she's probably talking loudly to hear herself

We're going to be closely watching her ears with regular appointments to see if it clears up on it's own. I hope so

the only time we knew DD has issues was at night when lying down, the pressure then causes pain

ahhh true Olive, and I guess it must be uncomfortable having blocked ears/hearing too. We're lucky so far that sleeping is still unaffected.

Hi girls- just saw this coz I've been searching for 'ear' related posts. Not sure what's wrong with DS- no temps... but he just won't lie down to sleep- just wondering what you did for sleeping when their little ears were sore?

Just wanted to offer some tips my GP gave me when DS was having similar problems (but not as severe by the sounds of things). He had one ear infection after another from about 11 months till around 18 months and every time we went to the doctor there was fluid behind the ears. Then one day it cleared up and since then we haven't had one (touch wood).

My GP is quite holistic and looks for natural ways to aid the healing. So her advice was:
    • have a vaporiser on in their room for all sleeps – the moisture stops the fluid from drying up and causing infections
    • use saline nasal spray before bed time in the evening – again cos it keeps the fluid moving
    • keep upright after milk or bf for 5 mins or so to ensure milk doesn't get stuck in the eustation (sp?) tubes when they're laying down and leave bacteria to cause infection
