What happens to your medical records when..

Your GP moves to a different clinic?
Do they move with the GP or stay with the medical practice?

What about if they retire or the clinic itself closes?

Good question! I know when my mum's clinic closed down she got a letter saying that all of the records had gone into storage and if she wanted them she could pay a fee - which sounded ridiculous to me as by attending and paying at the clinic she was effectively paying for the maintenance of her medical records.

Hopefully someone else has an answer as I am also interested!

I'd say your records stay with the original clinic unless you authorise their release to the new clinic.

Years and years ago there was a massive falling out with the Dr's at the local Dr's surgery and a letter was sent out to all the patients stating what was happening (that one Dr was leaving to start a new practice) and you had to sign a release form for your medical records to leave that building and go with him to the new building if you wanted to continue having him as your Dr. Patient records 'belong' to the building.

Yeah, I'd say they're at the same clinic, not with the doctor.

If you want to follow the doctor, you'll need to sign a release.

My GP has moved clinics about 5 times in the last 20 years. Each time, I sign a release sending my file with her.
