DD (8 mths) has quite sensitive skin but recently we've noticed she gets a rash after eating tomatoes eg actual tomatoes, pasta sauce etc. I thought she was only getting it from contact, so on her arms and legs (we do BLS so she gets food everywhere!) but suprisingly not on her face. A couple of days ago she had a very tomatoey beef casserole and she got the rash on her back too (but didn't get any food on her back!).
So I'm not sure if this is a skin sensitivity (I had eczema as a child and young adult) or an actual allergy. But it seems to be getting worse with each time she has tomato foods.
Any thoughts?
ETA I also think she's allergic to grass/pollen, as each time we take her out to the backyard, her nose starts running almost immediately. I am allergic to grass.
my DD has had eczema since she was about 4 months she seems to have it all the time but there is only food one food i can see a reaction to is tomatoes!!Like if i make a pasta bake or something or if i mash up tomatoey pastes it flares up really bad!Shes now gone 2 and is still the same!I just stopped her for a while and sure enough it would clear up then id either forget (yes bad i know)or try it again and sure enough id think ok what did we have for tea??and it was always something tomatoey or acidic!
My youngest had a sensitivity to tomatoes as well and would break out in a hot red rash wherever the tomato had touched his skin. So we avoided tomatoes with him for a few months and trialled them again and it seems that he grew out of it because now he can eat them without getting a rash. I would avoid them and reintroduce them after a while and see how she goes.
I'd say you were right. Lots of people who are sensitive to tomatoes also have issues with chocolate (I know - unlikely she'll have any) and oranges.
Since there is a building sensitivity, I'd probably mention it to a GP.
Allergy to Nightshade vegetables is actually quite common. My DD has a topical reaction like the one you described to eggplant.
Keep an eye on her when she eats other veg from the family, including paprika and cayenne pepper, eggplant, capsicum and even potatoes. She may have reactions to other, she may not. DD doesn't have any other allergy or reaction to anything at all.
Make sure you tell her caregivers or day care, grandparents etc so they don't give her tomatoes.
