lactose intolerance???? or something else like proteins???

i was advised by my chemist to try my bub who is 11 weeks old from s26 gold to the lactose free formula.
i was told he had reflux, but he is not pooping right, its still like newborn poo all seedy looking but it can be very green. not firm at all, he is unsettled most times, as he throws up regulary, also his poo's are quite a horrible smell (my other 2 had formula and never smelt that bad). he said if lactose free improves him or not see gp asd they'll test his poo and see if he is lactose intolerant (then im entitled to prescrpition formula for him or something) if it not what could it be? could it still be reflux or something to do with proteins, he's been like this since birth. i have not dealt with lactose free or other issues besides reflux (ds2 was a very happy chucker)
i dont know what questions to ask or what to ask to look for.
any help will be much appreicated xx

Take him to the GP before you try the formula if you can.

The test - as I was told yesterday - requires them to have ingested lactose for 5 days minimum. So if you want the test done, try to push the GP asap to get in and get it done. Because once they go off lactose and it does improve without lactose, you dont really want to go backwards.

My DD has been on lactose free, but I didn't get her tested beforehand. So it's my word against the doctor because I don't want to bring back my unhappy baby to prove a point.

    I hope it helps xx.

Is your baby grunting and growing all the time or having a hard time settling. I had a wonderful doc that put my twins on prescription lactose free formula without testing their poo as my ds1 was so uncomfortable ALL the time that doc ordered crate and when she checked them out his poor little belly was full of air! Good luck hope it is all worked out!

actually he does always very unsettled and will grunt and pull off bottle alot (even though teat flow is right) i am going to ring as see if i can get him into the docs asap. he only drinks under the recommened ml's maybe 150ml at the most. he always done that too so maybe he has air? oh my poor bub i wish i knew what exactly is going on with him. he will only maybe have a play period of half an hour if that then he's back to his upset self (he does manage to smile so much though even through his little sad periods)

Ds is on lactose free, and still has yucky green poo's especially when he has a bad reflux attack. He is on Zantac for his reflux.

i have just tried something with him i usually use avent bottles, but used one of the new nuk bottles and teats and now sitting in his bouncer having a goo'ing session! he has a presistant cough when he has been drinking but that may be his reflux (his spew will end up out his nose sometimes!) or a cold that has gone round the family. but maybe its colic. rang my docs cant get in until next week
so will have to wait til next week but if he responds better on a different bottle i might change them. i love seeing my little man happy, makes mummy one very happy mummy!

we took DS3 to the doctor (a new one) and i left feeling rather unhappy with his response.
i told him everything that poor bub has been going through, he told me it was "normal" and that its just my anxeity! told me its highly unlikely he is lactose intollerant (even though i have found out from family their bub showed exact same symptoms and did indeed have a lactose intollerance. nor did he think it may be a protein issue with the milk, and says its just reflux. supposedly its normal to have foul green smelly poo all the time and to be never firm. and every child is different and i should know that. i am worrying too much! but he is concerned on jakob's weight! well if he's protein or lactose intollerance it will affect his weight! he's now on weekly weigh ins to see how much weight is gained, and wanted to know how much he drinks (between 120-150ml each feed) and he is full to the brim for 2 to 3 hours. he made me feel so little like i dont know what i am doing or being a bad mum, i dont take my kids to the doctors hardly ever only when my intuition tells me too and each time i've been right!
i told him he has started sleeping throughout the night and he said thats rare for babies too and i must being doing something right! (is that a compliment or something after the whole appt i didnt know how to take things) i wont be seeing him again, ill be going to the doctor who has worked at the childrens hospital he would of not questioned me like i was on trial. thank god i cancelled my appt for my problems i wouldnt want more harrasment.
i will find out on tuesday his results, but he got the sample and then found out if it was done any longer than 20 minutes ago it might be a problem? my poor bub most days poos multiple times and i dont know what time he does them just tell by the smell lol, when we start to get a whiff we know he's got a present!
sorry to go on but it annoyed me jakob is doing fine, i know he's over 5.5kg at 3 months (he left hospital at just under 3kg) and he is a little shorty (got mummy and daddys shortness) and still fitting in 000's but i have noticed a growth spurt specially in some of his clothes their fitting more snuggly now not loose. so i think they are all good things.

Ashie, I don't know too much about lactose or protein allergies in formula fad babies, but the symptoms your son has really does sounds like a younger version of my son who does have a cows milk protein allergy. My advice would be to take him to a paediatrician, someone who is familiar with babies and what is and is not normal. Your doctor seems to have given you the brush off and it does sound like something is upsetting your baby

thankyou so much! thats who i am going to see the doctor who worked at the childrens hospital with premmie babies, he discovered DS2 had reflux and had a wonderful plan set out for him if he did not grow out of it (thankfully he did) so i think its a must for DS3, i know his 1st cousin had the same problem as a baby, his 2nd cousin on my side had a similar problem, my sister was on a soy when a baby so it does run in the family if its a gentetic thing? one of our nieces who is 13 has a allergy to dairy wheat gluten etc, so we are always cautious and seeing signs of intollerances to things. also sometimes his poop is stringy? but never a nice colour always different shades of green, he's been like this since birth sometimes seedy like newborn poo but the smell even when passing wind its loud and foul too. when he spits up sometimes its clear with speckles (little dots) of milk the others never did that, and it concerned me alot, all these little things dont add up when they tohught colic and wind i have tried colic and wind remedys and nothing works. i dont know if it can cause damage if he does have an intollerance and is just left to suffer IYKWIM. the other 2 were happy babies, and DS3 is happy but cries alot after a bottle when he spits up (which comes out through his nose still!) and if he has gas or poo's he's very upset (it sounds acidy you can hear it?) i use pampers nappies as they have a mesh which catches the more together items, and absorbs the acid and watery stuff which has helped keep his little bum clear from rashes.

If you google lacteeze hun its a great way to find out if he is lactose intolarant. I used this for DS when nothing else would work and its been a god send. You can get it from the chemist wearhouse and it replaces that enzyme thats missing if this is what hes got. Its also natural so wont effect bubs if its not whats wrong.

Hope you find some answers soon

got his results today they were normal which i dont know if its a good or bad thing as we also got him weighed. last time he was weighed was at 9 and a half weeks old at 5.080kg, today he was 5.390kg only gained 310g in 5 weeks! i dont know whats going on, the nurse has suggested to see a paed, and was told i cannot put this off any longer! (im the one pounding the counter!) me and dh are worried, the other two were great with weight, jakob was gaining 200g a week until about 7 or 8 weeks (he had been of bf since 6 and a half weeks) so its something to do with formula! he is so fussy though wont drink the reflux one (its too thick and tried changing teats but still refused) and only drinks usually 150ml or sometimes up to 180ml or even less. so i dont want him to drink less. going to see his health nurse and get her opinion on what i should do and what questions to ask. i am thinking about seeing my proper doc who i deal with (he's not a paed but an ob but see's all the babies he helped bring into this world) any clues on a formula that will help and not thick same consistance like the s26 gold? i am very worried now i thought he gained more weight than that but he's only tiny in length so his weight may be right for his height IYKWIM at 9 and a half weeks he was 52cm long! my poor baby cannot catch a break of being normal, he deserves some normal and not having to go to the doctors each week.

Is your son being medicated for reflux?? Might I suggest that because medicating it makes a WORLD of difference. My son was diagnosed at 7 weeks, and within a week of Losec, he was great. He still had acidic days, but his poo got much more normal. He's 11 months old now & we're weaning him off the medication.

As for weights: don't get hung up on the numbers. If he's tracking on a line, then that's great. The only drama is if his falls off his line. Same applies for length. The charts are made of averages - to get those, you need monsterously big babies, and wee tiny skinny babies. Mine is a petite baby & it makes it so much easier to carry him.
