Sore Boobs...What is the actual cause?????

    Hiya

2dp2dt here and my boobs are sore! Not on progesterone (just did my first pregnyl jab five mins ago). Previous cycles I put the sore boobs down to crinone/pessaries.

Obviously too early for PG symptoms so just wondering if anyone knows the cause of sore and swollen boobs.

My guess would be the leftover from the trigger... but I may be wrong! Did you have any type of p4 support at all after transfer? You'll probably find that the pregnyl will accentuate it as well...

progesterone starts to act around the time of ovulation

Progesterone causes water to be retained in the body. The main reason for this is to prepare the uterus for a possible pregnancy by making the uterus rich in water and food for the anticipated pregnancy. Unfortunately, this same effect is felt throughout the body. Storing of water in the breast tissue causes it to become stretched leading to painful breasts and sore nipples.
I stole this of the intermernet. Seeing as TF and ovulation are around the same time, then it could be a bad case of water on the boob.

    No p4 support...

Had Ovidrel trigger last Saturday night. Of course, could be "natural" progesterone I guess.

I have never had pregnyl before but I am fully expecting to get the pg symptoms as a side effect!

Not sure what the usual dosage is but I am on 1500iui on day 4 and 8 after pickup.

It might have something to do with the weather? I dunno?? Not being cheeky or anything, but it is cold and wet and crappy here.
Good excuse to put your feet up and relax. xx

Waaaayyyy ahead of you on the relaxing thing

I find it's one of the (few) perks of IVF

Actually, come to think of it, there's not much relaxing about IVF

You forgot emotional poo-storm, empty bank balance, trying to think of excuses for taking time off work and having to give up soft cheese in the 2ww! All of which would be fine if you get a BFP!

....and no alcohol to get us through it all

I often get sore boobs straight after O these days and I have read that they get sorer pre AF as you get older ( not that you'll be getting af), as they keep developing with each period up til about 40yo ( I'm doing a talk at work about breast anatomy and physiology so am reading about it now ). So it could be your own hormones.

My last few TWWs I have had sore boobs the first week and nothing the second week, not very encouraging when your looking for signs of pregnancy-you would think our boobs would be on our side

Good luck, hopefully its the start of something good

    Hi N2L,
I had really sore boobs two days prior to my pcik up & are still a little sore now. Good news about pregnyl NO SIDE EFFECTS I have had nothing..... So in some ways at least I'm not getting any false pregnancy syptoms. Bad news ... I have no pregnancy symptoms I actually feel fine.... But I will see how I go I'm not going to judge it till the Bld test

I think it's all to do with how your body reacts to the hormones. For me, it's not progesterone - my highest level was 725 and I wasn't even tender! In fact I've only had slightly tender boobs once, which was immediately after trigger this last cycle and it lasted 3 days tops. So that was hcg, but, my hcg is now much higher than it was then and I still feel nothing! From what I've read, if you tend to get sore boobs around the time of af, then you're more likely to get sore boobs from ivf. I don't know if size has anything to do with it? I'm a pretty small A, so I guess there's not much tissue there to swell!

Hi ladies, I am only just starting my IVF journey, but wanted to comment on the sore boobs. I have no experience yet how the drugs will affect my boobs, but i have found over the years the statement Saffy said about them getting sorer as you approach 40 to be true.

I am 38 and my boobs get intensly sore each month the older I get and even though I pray I dont get Af in exchange of a pregnancy at the same time I find myself hoping it would hurry up and come just for some relief, however in saying this, I have also found if I am being really good and keeping up with regular exercise before I ovulate I have no pain at all. Not sure what the scientific explanation is for this. i would love toknow if other women have found this.

re exercise easing sore boobs- lymph flow is poor across the the chest in women as there is a lot between the lymphatic system just under the skin, and the muscles just over the bones. The lymphatic system has no pump and uses the movement of muscles to get things going. Modern firmly supportive and uplifting bras make this issue worse- hence the increase in breast lumps and bumps in Western culture. Fluid build up premenstrually is eased by exercise because it gets that lymph moving- all over the body. Breast swelling can be eased by breast massage (either professionally or a good joobling by a caring friend) if exercise seems too hard!

-just noticed you said before you ovulate...in that case I'd guess its possibly due to an increase of androgens which antagonise oestrogens which can cause some sorts of breast pain...
