We saw a pharmacist about 2 months ago and he said the mark on DD1's leg was a ringworm and to treat it twice a day with the ringworm treatment cream and it should be gone it 2 weeks.
Well, here we are 2 months later with the same 6cm round ringworm plus a few little ones and new ones. They aren't itchy or very red thank goodness and some have faded a bit using the cream but they are still there.
I went to another chemist today and she couldn't give me another cream that was suitable for a 3 year old so told me to go to the doctor as her immune system might be bad. I picked up a prescription (advanten) for DD2 for her excema and the lady suggested I put that on the ringworm to see if it clears it up as she would normally suggest an anti-fungal cream and cortisone for ringworm in older people.
I don't think there would be any harm in using it, but I think you should go to the drs. If it is ringworm it is highly contagious, and can be hard to treat. My brother had it recently and needed a prescription only cream to clear it up.
I agree, see the dr. Sometimes skin things can turn a bit tricky.
FWIW my DD had a dreadful fungal infection on her leg, dr advised to slather it in cream before bed then wrap it in gladwrap overnight. The gladwrap makes the skin take up more of the active ingredient. It healed really quickly after that, so maybe try the gladwrap trick too.
I wouldn't use cortisone on a ringworm...cortisone/steroids are like fertiliser for fungii, cortisone treatment is how i got ringworm in the first place......deifintely see your doctor and get a presciption anti fungal...also a good probiotic will help to fight the fungus from the inside as well.
Are you sure it's a ringworm? I had a 'ringworm' on my leg for over a year! I worked in a pharmacy at the time and every pharmacist I worked with agreed it was a ringworm and recommended a cream to clear it.. Nothing worked.. Until I stopped all creams, changed soaps and started using MooGoo Milk Wash. It disappeared within a week and has not returned. I think it was actually psoriasis.
Go and see a Dr and get a scraping done to be sure. You will need to not put anything on it for 7 days before hand so that it is an uncontaminated sample. I know it will be hard mentally but if it turns out to be tinea (ringworm is tinea) then you will know exactly how to treat it.
If it's really bad and the cream doesn't help (you need to use the cream for 2 weeks after they disappear, not just for 2 weeks. I made the same mistake and they came back with more and they were more resistant) or gets in the scalp then there are oral meds you can take. The course is really long though depending on their age/weight. I had to see a paediatric dermatologist to get these though as my Dr didn't know anything about the meds and wouldn't prescribe them.
Thanks for your responses. I think I have been a bit blase about the whole thing not really knowing that it is bad news. The good news is that they are finally clearing up. We think that maybe because she has had a cold the last couple of weeks the ringworm was hanging in there. If I don't see more improvement in the next week I will def make an appointment with the Doctor.
Marydean, that sounds good re the clingwrap. I shall keep that in mind.
