DD2 in the first few weeks would actually go to sleep on her own, id often wrap her, pop her on the bed, go to the loo/do something with dd1 for a sec, come back to rock her to sleep like i always had to with dd1 and shed be asleep!
as the weeks went by she did it less and less and then dh went back to work and we got one of those baby rockers, it pop her in there and shed sleepfor hours, go to sleep on her own etc, gave me time to look asfter dd1, do housey things etc.
it got to a point where she would have most of her day sleeps in there, some on the bed, depending on what dd1 was soing ans how much tinme i had.
the batteries ran out a few days ago and we were unable to get any new ones for a few days....well....she WOULDNT sleep anywhere other than on me, couldnt put her down...wouldnt even go in the sling! i bassically held her for two days till we got more batteries.
i didnt really mind as dh was home but its just not practical for when hes at work
i feel like by putting her in the rocker more i have broken her ability to sleep unaided and wondering if i have set myself up for months of rocking...i guess i did the same with dd1 and up till about 10 months old i had to rock/hold her till she was asleep. did i do that, am i doing it again??????
I think the swing is probably a sleep aid but I wonder if it's that big of an issue? Just make sure you have backup batteries :P I think as she grows and gets too big for the swing you'll find she needs it less. ALso, if you are concerned, just slow down the swinging gradually until you are just putting her in there without turning it on and off she goes.
Like Strangelk says... It's a sleep association she has and it sounded like it was working beautifuly. If you're happy with it keep doing it, she's getting sleep, you're getting to tend to DD1 and even do a few things around the house. That's pretty awesome... Slowing down the swing gradualy sounds like a great idea to wean her off that need when the time comes. Just do what works best for you
No I don't think you broke her, lol. DD2 was like that too in the first 4 weeks, a dream! I thought I'd got myself a great sleeper who could self-settle already, what luck! Umm....nope, it was just the newborn sleepy period She's over that now. But it's ok, she's still much better than DD1 was.
