Grommets have fallen out, now what?

My DD had grommets put in her ears at 2 years of age. About 5 months ago I noticed a grommet just sitting in her ear, so I grabbed the tweezers and pulled it out. It had obviously done its job and come loose. I never spotted the other one, but I am assuming that one fell out around the same time.

Does anyone know if you need to keep using ear plugs and trying to keep water out once the grommets have gone? As I have been pretty relaxed about it and so far no issues. I am just starting to wonder if I should as we are off to Bali soon and I am wondering whether to pack the plugs and swimming cap, last thing we want is infected ears on our holiday.

My son had 4 sets of grommets and to be honest they didnt really help in the long term he ended up with such servere damage to his left ear drum he has had it reconstructed twice from skin as his ear drum rotted away and the only thing that seemed to help was to avoid water in the ears altogether and try to avoid colds as the mucas is worse than water so my poor DS could not swim in pools/lakes bath water ect only the ocean as salt water was the better option but we tried to avoid that also unfortunetly his ears just dont drain even now at 18 years old so if he does get water in his ears he uses aqua ear to help dry them out and if he gets a cold he is on antibiotics and ear drops straight away it's never ending and dont be fooled into thinking ear plugs work as water gets up their nose and into their eustation tubes then ears when they swim also.

Hope your daughter's 1st set is her last.

id ring your ENT and ask, but i assume once there out things are generally ok. im more worried about DD's coming out and needing them again. she had hers dont 12 months ago and there still in place. has your DD had any ear infections since they fell out??

DD2 had her grommets in about 18 months ago and they were both out when the ENT checked her about 6 months later (although still stuck in wax in the ear canal!) He was happy to ditch the earplugs after that, but we've had a couple of checkups since then to make sure everything's ok. I'd probably ring your ENT to check. Have you had any checkups since they've come out? We've been lucky and 1 set seems to have fixed everything for her - last checkup was in April with a perfect hearing test and ENT doesn't want to see us again If your DD hasn't had any further infections she's probably ok, but I don't know that Bali is the place to test it out!

She hasnt had any further infections. I might just call the ENT to see what he thinks. No, Bali is definately not the place to test it out hehehe!
