....that's all I seem to be doing lately with DD. When we're out anywhere. At home, piece of cake, she's lots of fun, cheeky, but we're on our own home turf so it's all good.
Head out anywhere, whether it be walking holding my hand, in the pram (not a fave spot at all at the moment) or in a trolley and she just about drives me nuts.
She just wants to get into everything, or run everywhere, or follow everyone, or grab everything. Don't get me wrong, I'm so glad she has a healthy curiosity, is eager to explore the world etc etc. But she just doesn't stop, and I've realised I'm actually starting to dread going anywhere with her.
As soon as she sees something she wants she starts with the loudest 'ta ta ta ta' over and over again, and cracks it when she doesn't get it. This morning she even tried to climb out of the trolley she was having such a hissy fit. We had to sit at the bank for all of 5 minutes and she was absolutely cracking it on my lap trying to get down, didn't want the rusk/drink/book/toy I had to try and keep her busy. There were too many people coming in and out to let her down.
I know I need more patience, and I need to not have such high expectations of her, she's just a little ball of curious energy, but I'm coming home in the foulest moods and finding I'm getting so short tempered.
It's all normal isn't it? For a 14month old? If I stick with not giving in to every 'ta' and making her hold my hand etc it should pass shouldn't it? Or am I destined to do late night shopping after her bedtime from now on in?!
Harlee is like that too.. I dont get out much with her though.. she is WAY too full of beans. I do my grocery shopping online while she is in bed. Going to the shops will not happen with her. Speak of the devil, my shopping delivery is here now! Yay! And shopping is now done lol
Yeah, it's normal. It does ease off a bit with some time (somewhat dependent on personality I think).
Perhaps you can think of some workarounds for the essentials, like tali suggests. And try and get out for fun toddler activities (weather permitting, how lovely is the rain?!) to run off some steam when you can (her steam, you can take it easy hopefully)
Oh no I could never do the shopping online - I love grocery shopping. Sad I know
It's good to know it's most likely just a phase, which I guess I knew that, perhaps I should have asked if it's normal to get so frustrated as a parent!
Madb it's funny you say that, I was just thinking today that we do lots of fun stuff at home, but when we go out it's always for errands. I do need to make more of a point of going out to do toddler stuff just for her, balance it all out a bit. And yep this rain is awesome, maybe DD and I need to go shopping for gumboots!
Your DD sounds just like my DS! I can't take him anywhere lately! It's much easier just staying home. Must get computer fixed so I can take advantage of grocery shopping online!
I love grocery shopping too! DS is a bit the same. I find he's better in a trolley, but if it's a pram or I'm carrying he wants EVERYTHING and NOTHING (ie most of the time when he gets it, he just throws it straight away - lovely developmental phase!). And the screeches and whinges if he doesn't get it.... eek! I too love that he's curious, but it's also exhausting. I have even thought of getting a harness so he can have a bit of freedom and walk by himself some of the time, especially when it's a safety issue (like when he's trying to walk out onto the road!). But I also want him to learn he needs to hold my hand sometimes, and that he can't just have everything he wants.
Anyway, just letting you know I sympathise. I find short errands are the key (say, 1/2 hour), and the fewer ins and outs of car seats/prams, the better. Toys and books work only sometimes, he's often better with things he wouldn't normally have to play with (my handbag - all zipped up!, an empty pen case, a water bottle etc). Oh, and Mum to stay at home with him while I go grocery shopping! Here's hoping it's a short phase, lol!
Sounds like your DD has character just like our little DS.
From what I understand though it's genetics in our household. Apparently DH was a complete little so and so! Back in England the grocer would follow DH and his mum around the shop and try to catch the things that DH would throw from the shelves. From his pram he would stick his arm out and jars, cans and anything else would go flying into the aisles!! I thought it most hilarious until Robert started along similar lines .....grrrrrr!
FWIW I also love grocery shopping. For now though I shop online. It works out cheaper because I only buy what I need rather than want. I satisfy my urges (hehehe) every now and then by going shopping by myself when DH can stay at home with bubs.
