Any tips on teaching kids how to do their own buttons?

I have a reluctant 4 yo who throws in the towel all too soon. Any tips on how to teach him to do his own buttons would be appreciated.
    TIA

That title should read any tips. That's what auto spell just changed it too!

Im not too sure.. I started by letting DD play with my jackets that have big buttons as it was easier to work with. Then showed her how it worked and let her have a go etc. Now she can do up and undo her bottons... Shes 2.5. Im not sure if that help, but might be an option.

I might go out and get some big buttons and make some buttonholes to practise

    BTW thanks Olive for editing

I will have to ask my MIL - we send our kids to "Nanna Bootcamp" any time we strike a parenting obstacle LOL!

(Seriously, she toilet trained my nephew and taught our boys to eat with a knife and fork.)
