    GD and big baby question

I have GD and so far am controlling it with diet only. I also just had my 31w scan done and the baby is measuring about 2.1kg and about 2 weeks ahead which doesn't bother me as I know the US are 100% accurate. Every GD appointment I mention that I am having a VBAC this time and they all go, 'Oh you have GD so I am fairly sure you will have another c-section!' WTF!

So my question is do I really need to have a c-section just because there is a chance I will have a big baby because of GD? I am pretty keen on trying for the VBAC and don't like any one telling me what I have to do. If there are serious medical reasons for another c-section I will go that way but I will not be having a planned one at this stage.

It depends as they don't like you going past 38 weeks just in case the baby is too big and most ob's won't induce after a sect. I was booked for another c sect at 38 weeks but went into labour naturally at 37 so got my vbac.

I had GD and ended up on insulin. I was induced for vag birth at 38wks because bubs was 4wks ahead. Unfortunately bubs didn't move and my body didn't take over from the pitocin, so I ended up having a c-section. A VBAC is definitely still a viable option for you :-)

For me, no. My OBS said there was no reason to have a c-sect or be induced b/c my GD was under control via diet & exercise. I went 40+9 days but did end up with an emergency c-sect that had nothing to do with the GD.

OBS 'guessed' that DD would be between 7.5 - 8.5 pds.

DD weighed in at 7pd 5 oz and 49.5cms - note that my DH & I are not tall people.

I can't see why you have to have a c-sect based on what you told me.

My GF had GD with insulin & went into labour, ended up with a c-sect & her DS was over 11pd - her OBS had no idea that he would be that big.

Hi hun, no you don't have to have a c-sec

I went to 40+2 with DD, had my waters broken for me at 2.5cm dilated after 3 weeks of constant pre-labour and I got my VBAC just tell them you want wireless monitoring (if they refuse then refuse to have any monitoring at all) and have as active a labour as possible to help get bub into the right position

I was also told I'd be having a 9+ pounder (37wk scan said she was 7pd 9), and DD was spot on 8 pounds when she was born with no complications even though ended up needing insulin in the last 5 weeks of the pregnancy.

Good luck hun and I can't wait to see your BA

Induction of Labour - The Hidden Dangers of Labour Induction

There is a section in that article about induction and GD for suspected big baby, including a study published in the US OB/Gyn Assoc journal.
