    Asthma in a 2.5yr old

So it turns out that Miss B has asthma!

This is totally freaking me out! as if i wasn't paranoid about leaving her for long period of times before hand, now i never want to leave her or let her out of my sight incase she has a massive asthma attack!

I am prob being stupid and i know there is much much worse things that could happen, much worse than asthma but i feel so sad that we have lost our once perfectly healthy baby girl! is that silly?

No not silly at all! Asthma can be very scary.
I had bad asthma when I was little and ended up in hospital a few times (before I can remember). Not intended to scare you but just know you are most certainly aloud to feel sad and scared about it. Hopefully your little girl wont suffer any major asthma attacks. Big

that is my biggest worry! already i have no plans of leaving her during the night as that is when it is worse!
Do you still have asthma or did you grow out of it?

Alot of kids grow out of asthma. And those who don't, generally it is a very easily managable condition. I have had asthma all my life. My father has always had asthma, my brother also grew up with asthma. My DS1 has asthma, and my DS2 has had acouple of incidences which were likely asthma - but he is as yet undiagnosed.

How did you discover your DD's asthma?

My DS1 gets bad asthma, but generally only when he is sick and is feeling run down. The nurses at the ED know him and my DH by name. The main concern is simply recognising the symptoms and treating as soon as you realise they are in difficulty. The good thing about asthma is that in most cases it is very easily treated. And preventative measures go a long way (keeping living environment clear of allergens - like dust, pollen, strong fragrances, using wool bedding rather then feather/down, etc). And if the asthma is very bad or the child is at risk (due to illness or environmental factors) they doctors should write up an preventative medication plan as well.

I know it is normal to worry, but you will find with time that asthma really isn't that bad.

I can't imagine how scary it must be. DD just had croup and that was scary enought with the way she was breathing.
I have it very very mild now so pretty much grew out of it. Just need ventalin everynow and then after exercing etc if I'm not on a preventer. I think the worst of it was over by the time I was 4.

My youngest DD is 2.5yrs and has chronic asthma. My 18 mth old is also heading in the same direction.
She has had more hospital admissions than I care to remember.
It can be scary but if you have an action plan and possibly find out her triggers it can make you a little better prpared.
Now the signs to look out for and when to take her to hospital.
Informing myself as much as possible has made me a little more relaxed.
What is your little poppet on?
We are on flixotide and ventolin and the redipred when needed.
Hopefully she won't have any serious attacks

DD who is just turned 2 is more then likely asthmatic. She has been hospitalised 3 times (including once overseas, now that was scary!) and is currently on an asthmatic preventative medication plan and seeing a couple of specialists to monitor her condition. It is hard but you cant wrap them up in cotton wool so to speak all the time, you just need to get on with your life and do things as you normally would.

DD still has sleepovers at grandparents, runs around with her siblings and unfortunately is exposed to a number of germs on a daily basis when we do the school run. I hate it but I can't spend all my time worrying about it or I would never get anything done!

Best I can do is take control of the things I can - eg not going on a playdate when I know there are other sickly children there.

Good luck, as much as it is worrying try not to stress too much. Easier said then done I know!

misty - she has had this bad bad cough going on almost 3mths now, and gets very wheezy so we have been to the doctor on numerous occassions and also to the hospital. First it was just a cold/flu than it was bronchitis and now we have been told it is most likely Asthma! she is at her worst after running around and when the weather gets cooler. I'm a clean freak so house is pretty much clean from dust etc.. and now after reading your post i have just thrown out all the glade automatic spray things!

munchkin_mumma - i hope my DD1 is over the worst of it by the time she is 4 too than

RainbowBrite - i'm so sorry to hear that your bubba 18mth old is heading down the same track as your 2.5yr old! how scary that would be to have 2 bubbas with asthma! i really hope DD2 dosen't follow in her sisters foot steps! at the moment Miss B is on Bricanyl???? and we also have Predmix O-Soln?? (sorry just writing down whats on the bottle).

Ang - oh my gosh!!!!!!!! that would of been scary! it is bad enough when your little one has to go to hospital let alone when your overseas! so sorry! and your right i know that i can't keep DD1 or DD2 wrapped up in cotton wool but my gosh the thought of something bad happening to them scares me so bad!
MN - thank you! the doctor did say that this may just be seasonal asthma - so is that what your bubba's have?

I had bronchiolitis (or somesuch!) as a child (about 6 weeks) almost died, ended up in hospital etc, etc...(no one would take my mum seriously) but because of that I ended up being athsmatic (also with a heart murmur) was in and out of hospital until I was 5-6 years old, then my heart murmur closed over and I "grew out" of being asthmatic.

My neice was constantly getting sick, wheezing etc...her mum took her to sooo many docs, had so many courses of anti biotics etc, told it was allergies, put on claratyne for months, then FINALLY when she was 7 yrs old (this all started around age 3) a doc diagnosed asthma, suddenly she was a different child! now she is 15 and has "grown out" of it too.

Also my brother, quite badly asthmatic for a number of years, in winter mum always had the ventilator ready to go, I remember lots of late night trips to emergency too...anyway he also "grew out" of it around 12 years of age.

not much help for you but just wanted to let you know a few of my own anecdotes!
I'm sure Miss B has being giving you a bit of a fright, but with the right management and an action plan (not to mention the fact that you already know so much medically etc) I'm sure all will be well.
    Big hugs gorgeousxoxox
