Are there any hobby shops or game shops around these days?

I am wanting to buy a really good quality chess set for DS. I'm willing to spend a couple of hundred dollars on one. Today, I went into a shop and asked if they sold chess sets. The lady there said they didnt but suggested I go and buy an electronic one! She didn't seem to understand that I wanted an 'old school' chess set

There used to be game/hobby shops but they don't seem to exist anymore. Or at least I can't seem to find any. We did have Socrates but that's closed down now.

Does anyone know where I can buy a good chess set in Melbourne's Eastern Suburbs??

Sorry can't comment on Melb specifically but there are still a few around Adelaide and there's a big one in Canberra, so there must be some left in Melb.

I know of one in Geelong but that doesn't help you! But I thought like MD - if there is one here there must be one in Melbourne. Have you looked online?

    Good luck!

I don't know Melbourne, but can recommend a site called games paradise. They have a Sydney store.. Don't know if they have others. There's also hobbyco? Don't know if they have chess sets/games tho..

Ask at Australian Geographic - they owned Socrates so they may be able to give you some assistance. My cousin worked at Socrates, was a great shop!

Raven. I wonder why? It would be great if you could check out that place and let me know.

You guys are legends! I've checked out the sites and they have EXACTLY what I'm after, thank goodness they're still out there....somewhere!

    Keep the suggestions coming.

It's not local, but if you get desperate, Games Paradise is an online store, based in NSW but we've never had any problems with their service.

There used to be a game shop in the city. It was in the last arcade in the Bourke Street mall heading towards Elizabeth street.
