Sometimes when I am at work, I'll have a moment where I think "Yep, that's why I do this job" Other days I think "Why the hell am I here" Lol. So tell me about your job..
What do you do?
How long have you been doing it?
How did you get into it?
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it?
I'll start...
What do you do? I'm in Aged Care working as a Personal Carer
How long have you been doing it? About 7 months
How did you get into it? After my babies died I wanted to do something other than Family Day Care. The course was cheap and short, and it was a pathway into nursing which is what I really wanted.
Do you enjoy it? Sometimes.. I love the nursing industry, I love caring for people and making a difference. I hate how busy and understaffed it can be. I HATE cleaning up faecal incontinence (like I had to twice today.. )
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? No. My ultimate job is to be a stay at home mum.. as far as paid work though, I would one day like to be a mental health nurse..
I've been working for this particular MP since Jan 2008, but I've worked for various politicians since leaving uni ten years ago.
How did you get into it?
I got involved in student politics when at University. I made a heap of contacts in the Labor Party through volunteering on election campaigns and then the work offers came from there.
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it?
Yep. I get the ability to work with amazing people that are committed to changing the world.
What do you do? Recruitment - trainees, apprentices, graduates.
How long have you been doing it? 8 & 1/2 at my workplace, 7 years in my current role.
How did you get into it? Applied for a Government traineeship after dropping out of Uni, won the role, and after 18 months I moved into recruitment as someone in HR needed help.
Do you enjoy it? Yes, for the most part I love my job - I always say I never would've chosen it for my career had I been asked where I'd be now, but glad I fell into it! Am looking forward to 12 months away for maternity leave though...!
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? Probably not - assuming money wasn't an issue, I'd love to do volunteer work with animals, maybe help raise/train service dogs (for vision or hearing impaired people) or something along those lines. But happy to go back there in 12 months assuming I don't win lotto in the meantime!

What do you do? I'm a Registered Nurse and a Midwife
How long have you been doing it? I have been a Registered Nurse for 5 years and a Midwife for 18months
How did you get into it? I never put any effort into school until year 12 - when I realised I wanted to do nursing/midwifery in a rural hosptial, maybe even one day join the flying doctors- (I wanted to do midwifery and in order to do it you had to be a nurse, so I did nursing), and then I worked my butt off. But was too late and still didn't get a high enough UAI to get in. So I went through a back door route, was like a bridging course but one that gave me credit towards my course. It did take me an extra year to complete though (4 1/2). I then worked in nursing, mainly emergency and at rural hopsitals and then did my post grad to do midi - which I actually applied a year earlier but didnt get in then, so applied again the next year, and go in then.
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? My dream would be to make a living off my artwork. I do love the work I do in this job, but the last place I worked ate my soul. it destroyed it for me. and I am only now just seeing the beauty in it again...and it might actually take a while to get my real passion for this job back.. but atleast there is no more soul eating going on.
I have often thought about being an undertaker...
What do you do? I'm a HR Manager - currently working for a manufacturing/fashion/retail company
How long have you been doing it? I've been in HR for about 12 years now
How did you get into it? I studied Psychology at uni and then did Management Psychology and worked in recruitment for a while. Then I did my Masters of Business in HR and then moved into a more Generalist area.
Do you enjoy it? Generally yes - it is certainly never dull! And I have worked in a huge number of different industries including consulting, automotive, IT and fashion.
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? Well with my current talents I would but if you magically bestowed exceptional talents on me then I'm sure there are others I would prefer.
Nothing like a cuddle from DD after a hard day's work!

What do you do? I'm a Senior software test analyst
How long have you been doing it? 10 years
How did you get into it? Did IT course and enjoyed the programming aspect. Friend worked for a software company told me about a graduate role in testing while I was still wearing as a search engineer
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? Currently, Im really enjoying my new company, the people the technology and the fact that most people have heard of this company, so yes I would still do it.
What do you do? I am a civil engineer, currently working in the project management field
How long have you been doing it? 14 years in the engineering field, the last 6.5 doing project management (design before that)
How did you get into it? Did a civil engineering degree out of school, did structural design for a number of years, when DH and I got together I looked for jobs in the engineering area where he was and this came up. I was after a change from design anyway so it worked out well.
Do you enjoy it? Sometimes.. I don't like the arguments with contractors or the responsibility sometimes
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? I don't know. Sometimes I wish I just did a basic admin job which I could just walk away from at the end of each day. But I know I ultimaely would get bored doing that, but really don't know what else I would do (particularly in this rural area)
What do you do? SAHM at the moment but on leave from being a SSSO at a primary school (work in the admin office).
How long have you been doing it? 10 years.
How did you get into it? I actually did a TAFE course after high school that was Office Amin/Legal Secretary. Once it was complete i was given the opportunity to volunteer at the primary school while i applied for jobs. Within less than a year i was employed by the primary school.
Do you enjoy it? I have always loved it. It's busy, there is so much variety in a day/week/month and i loved being able to interact with the kids when they came to the Office.
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? It was never my 'chosen career' but i have loved it. Now that i've been out of the school full time for almost 4 years and been there part-time for a couple of years i'm not sure about going back. Starting to think about studying again and possiblly trying something new. Right now it's only thoughts though...
What do you do? I am a nurse and midwife and student maternal and child health nurse
How long have you been doing it? Have been a nurse for 12 years and a midwife for 8 years
How did you get into it? Always wanted to be a nurse and midwife, picked year 12 subjects that were pre req for nursing and went straight from year 12 to uni for 3 years, then i worked for 3 years as a nurse and did my mid while still working as a nurse and then changed to mid at end of course. MCHN studying currently 1/4 way thru course.
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? Yes I love working with families and especially love babies, MCHN gives me the avenue to get out of shift work while still working with the groups that I love. I will always do so casual mid work to keep foot in door.
What do you do? I'm a clinical project manager for a pharmaceutical company. I manage drug trials that are being run by doctors at hospitals around Australia, NZ and Asia Pacific
How long have you been doing it? 7.5 years
How did you get into it? Did a Bachelor of Medical Science and interviewed for a clinical trials assistant position and worked my way up from there. Completed a Masters of Medical Science while working
Dream job? Would this be it? No, I'd love to be a doctor and work for medicines without boarders or some other aid agency
What do you do? I'm a senior school chemistry teacher
How long have you been doing it? About to start next month!
How did you get into it? Teaching had been on the cards since I was little, I just never wanted to go school-uni-school as I figured I wanted to really appreciate my summer holiday, have some life experience and not be under 5 years older than my students. So I did a bachelor's degree, then did some more study in the subject I wanted to teach, then finally a post-grad education course.
Do you enjoy it? I really hope so! I enjoyed the training and I am going to work at a really gorgeous school.
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? If I had to work, this is what I'd pick to do (ask me again in 10 years!). Ideally I'd be a SAHM and maybe homeschool, especially as I don't think formal education should start until about 7 and am not looking forwards to Liebs being a problem in the classroom for someone else as he isn't ready for school yet.
How long have you been doing it? I've been 'in the job' for 8 years, and in my current 'Intelligence' role for 6 mths.
How did you get into it? I actually applied for something to do - never thought I'd actually get in. But for my current role....um, I can't actually reveal how I came to score this role !
Do you enjoy it? Yup - LOVE IT!
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? I am doing it already
What do you do? I am a case manager, working with people with acquired brain injuries that are in the non compensible system.
How long? 11 years now! But a few different programs. I have case managed in aged care, hospital to home, TAC, children's disability services, adult disability services and a few other hospital programs.
How did you get in? Did a Bach in science, and sort of stumbled in to it. I am currentlycompleting my Masters in social work.
Dream job? Nope. I like it but want to move out of community and in to either Social work in the education sector or corporate. DH is the medical field and is keen for me to get qualified and head abroad with the kids to do something meaningful.(although in the scheme of things I am not sure what that means!)
What do you do? I teach natural area restoration / applied environmental management at TAFE (currently on maternity leave).
How long have you been doing it? I’ve been in the industry for 12 years, 6 years at TAFE. (I’ve got a BSc.Environmental Science).
How did you get into it? I was in local government for a few years, first as a bush regenerator then as a bushcare volunteer coordinator. I applied for a permanent teaching job at TAFE not thinking I’d get it because I had no formal teaching qualifications or experience. But I did get it!
Do you enjoy it? I LOVE the teaching and I love being out in the bush with students. But.... the amount of stupid, inefficient administration I have to do and working for a big, clunky, resource-strapped bureaucracy really, really gets me down sometimes.
If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? Hmmmm.... yes for now, but in the future I’d really like to be working to protect endangered ecological communities more directly.
