We've just come back from the same kind of holiday. We stayed at Alexandra Headlands at the Breakfree resort. We used a stay 3 nights, pay for 2 on their website. The beach was right across the road, and so is a little playground. Although we didn't go there, Underwater World is only a 10 minute drive up the road at Mooloolaba.
We stayed in Caloundra in April last year for my cousin's wedding. Gorgeous spot and a great location to access all the attractions.
We had a stunning, luxury apartment at Aspects Caloundra. Views were amazing and the apartment (3 bed, 2 bath with a spa complete with views!) was top notch as was the location. We did lash out a bit to stay there bit it was so worth it. I think our apartment was just below the penthouse ones but can't remember the floor, maybe 11?
Caloundra, kawana, mooloolaba, Alexandra headlands, maroochydore, Perigian, coolum are all within half an hour of Aus Zoo... Caloundra is the closest. Look on travelzoo, they had a rumba hotel deal I think.
You're not really too far from anywhere on the sunshine coast. I love the Coolum/Perigian, Noosa area as it's quiet and not very commercial but still close enough to drive to see lots of things.
A drive up to the hinterland - Maleny, Montville, etc is definitely worth it. Pack a picnic lunch for the fam and stop on the side of the road overlooking the scenery. The Eumundi markets are well worth a look too - lots of great food and the people watching is well worth it! The national park in the Noosa area has some great walks too.
For retail therapy, Maroochy has great shopping centres.
Another thing I enjoy is going the the airport - Mudjimba which is just over the maroochy river towards coolum. I love watching the big planes coming in and leaving and might be something to entertain kids for a while!
I don't think it will be too cold for lovely walks and picnics on the beach either.
Make sure you get to Australia Zoo nice and early as there is a lot of cool stuff that the animals do earlier in the morning, and then later in the afternoon they sleep a lot. I think it opens gates at 09:00am.
we stayed with SIL when we went up in Nov last year. Australia Zoo is awesome and make sure you get to the main arena for the show.
We also went to the aquarium on the sunshine coast (I *think* it's in maloolabah but google is your freind here) and I personally thought it was better then the sydney aquarium, granted not as big but much better.
