I was just changing DS clothes and I noticed one of his shoulders feels different to the other. It feels like it's back further and it's a little swollen around it. Would this be dislocated? I was feeling it and he was upset but as soon as you pick him up he is ok. He is still moving it and his arm.
Would I know if it was dislocated? I'll take him to drs tomorrow but if it's dislocated I'll take him to hossy tonight. TIA.
oh and DH is feeding him now and hr is fine.,
I don't know for certain but I would imagine if it was dislocated then he would be in a lot of pain, and also be unable to move his arm. Could be have bruised it or bumped it that is causing him to be a bit guarded and pulling it back maybe? Certainly worth a trip to the GP tomorrow if you are worried though xx
Thanks Traveller. Yep thats what I assumed but you know what they say about that...
Ill keep and eye on him tonight and if he gets worse Ill take him to the ED.
Thanks again.
If you are worried then can you call your local hospital and ask for some advice? Mothers instinct is a great thing and hospitals are always happy to check out a baby xx
Is there a Nurse on Call number you can try hun?? If he is still awake can you get him to do some copycat arm moves - if it is dislocated I would think he wouldn't' be able to lift his arms avower his head etc.?? If he was complaining of it being sore while you moved it around I would be getting it checked out tonight hun, but I sam completely paranoid.
I'll try nurse on call. He is asleep at the moment. If I pressed on his shoulder he complained but I could move his arm up and down and he was ok. He was also super tiered after a huge day out so I don't know if he was crying about his shoulder or coz he was beyond tired...
Good luck hun- just letting you know they do like them to be awake for an assessment but see how you go and let us know how you go, remember mummy instinct is usually right so if you feel it's not right it probably isn't. Having said that maybe it could wait to morning if he is sleeping ok?
Oh and BTW - thanks to Mac Lion my automatic spellchecker thingy is about as accurate as my iPhone now.
A dislocated should has a 'step' feel to it. If you feel along his shoulder towards the arm is there a little indent downwards?
It's really easy to dislocate young bubs joints. Many many d/ls happen by total accident without you even being aware of it at the time. Because their cartilage/joints is/are still so soft their symptoms are different to an adults.
I'd def get him checked out tomorrow if you're worried.
I'm just trying to get my cranky 2.5 yo to bed and then I'll call nurse on call. If it was dislocated and he sleeps ok I wonder if it would be ok to wait till morning? Obviously if he is in pain I'll go straight away... I just don't know what to do!
Thanks Kim. I'll have a feel for that when he wakes. When I was feeling before it felt like one shoulder was more forward than the other?? It def feels different from the other one.. Gosh I'm going to feel like a horrible mum if it is dislocated!
Don't feel horrible hun, kids do crazy things all the time and accidents happen. James was upside down in a big washing basket for about 1 min before we realised last night - could have broken his neck! Happens quickly. Don't stress and if you definitely think it feels like it is dislocated I would be taking him tonight - just me but just in case it's pressing on nerves etc. it would need to be put back I would think?
I just rang nurse on call and the nurse said its hard to tell with bubs but she would think that he would be crying alot and be very unsettled. But she gave things to watch out for and to call if he got worse.
Good luck tomorrow - mum's intuition is a powerful thing!
FWIW we think my son was born with a dislocated shoulder and we didn't pick it up until he was 9 weeks old. He showed no pain, had limited movement in his arm, but we thought it was due to his torticollis. It was resolved when he went for his xray and the manipulation to put it in the right possie for the xray set it back. He has absolutely no problems with his shoulder now. I think though, if he's never had problems before, then he would show pain if there was something wrong. Best of luck x
DD1 dislocated her elbow at around 2. She was in alot of pain & couldn't move it at all.
I felt so horrible, coz I didn't realise til the next day that something really was wrong
There was no swelling that I noticed. It happened about 4 in the arvo & we went to hossy about 10 the next morning...
