I have ordered one as it worked out to be a tad cheaper when you consider building materials etc. But then I wanted weatherboard looking walls not flat ones and timber is really not that chearp if you go good stuff.
You can get plans to build them and if you have the right tools and the time then go for it. Just remember though time can be factored into costs so draw up your plans or hunt down some blue prints, ensure there are no needs for council permits (yes even for cubbies, check sizes) and get a costing on your materials BEFORE you commit to the project. If it works out cheaper then allow for extra timber especially if you have never built anything before as one wrong or crooked cut will see you buying more.

ETA - remember bolts, screws, nails roofing etc all comes under materials costs so its NOT just the timber PLUS any finishes so paint or stain x x x
