    Calling all nurses/midwives

I have a nursing hurdle tomorrow and am choked with the cold. I have emailed my tutor to find out if I can still sit my hurdle (I could not work on a ward like this) but have not got a response yet. Help! Has anyone sat a hurdle with a heavy cold? Are you allowed to? I am being tested on peri operative procedures, sterile dressing techniques, drug administration, CPR or oxygen/suction. I don't want to fail just for turning up with a cold.

At our Uni I don't think they would expect us to sit it if we are sick. We would need a DR's certificate though to say we were unwell though.

I've been around too long cos i don't even know what a hurdle is!? Is it on actual patients? Or just a pretend situation? Hope you can still sit it, its a pain to have to make things up.
Where are you doing placements? I am in geelong, might see you one day!!

thought the same thing Saffy! What's a hurdle? I'd suggest a Dr cert and a make up. If you're sick you're sick. But then, what's actually involved?

I thought the term hurdles was a uni-wide term!

It's a practical assessment, on dummies rather than real patients. We are to treat them like placement though and must pass if we are to attend placement. I have spoken to the unit chair though and she says they can't reschedule me as they are short on space, so they are going to make allowances for me as long as I can explain why I wouldn't turn up to placement sick Feeling much better now, I was so worried it would be an automatic fail if I turned up with my nose streaming!

my next placement is doing midwifery (yay ), and I'm not sure where I am after that (a 2 week acute nursing placement but I don't have my ward details yet).

you should be fine to do it if it isn't on real people lol. You would be washing your hands and wearing gloves I presume, for the steri stuff, so just wear a face mask if you are worried about a runny nose. Good luck!

Hurdles are done in post grad study usually... Well they may be in undergrad study now, but I have not heard of them. (well in Vic anyway)

Our hurdles were done on real patients, so it would have been inappropriate to turn up with a cold... But a drs certificate would have been required.

    Goodluck

I have never heard term hurdle in under grad or either of my post grads.

I would think if on dummys not real patients it wouldnt matter.

    Good luck

We have hurdle requirements- things you either pass or fail- no grade. And you HAVE to pass to pass the subject. All our clinical placements are hurdle requirements, plus our calcs tests, and some practical assessments for nursing or mid subjects. I am a monash undergrad. So isn't just you who uses the term.

Glad you passed Trav That's awesome

We have our Placements which are a pass/fail... And our 'Hurdles' are called OSCA's. You have to get over 50% to pass and must pass to pass the subject.
