I am wondering if any of you mums out there have heard of, or had a child with, Slapped Cheek or Fifth Disease?
My daughter (nearly 4) had a smallish rash on her left cheek the last couple of days, but today when she got up from a nap (she has NOT had an afternoon nap since she was about 18months old!) she was soooooooooooo irritable and her face was covered in spots! up behind her ears, on her neck and down her arms!
So took her off to the drs (one at a medical centre as we have just moved and haven't found a family dr yet :| ) and he was like *yeah, looks like slapped cheek*
I stared at him like WTF? and he explained that it was in the family of chickenpox etc .
Well, I am 30 weeks pregnant so I asked him if I need to worry and he just replies with *any viral infection can harm an unborn baby*.
(yep, will NOT being going back to this moron)
But my question is, I have googled and some sites say theres not much to worry about when this far along in pregnancy, where others say call yr Dr so they can take bloods to check if I have it!
My question is, *has anyone here had a child with Slapped Cheek while pregnant*? and if so, what did you do?
DD of a friend of mine had it recently. Another friend was PG at the time so she was obviously concerned about her DD being around our PG friend. Her GP advised that there was no risk to mother or baby after 26 weeks but our PG friend decided to play it safe and wasn't around until there was no risk of her catching it. Apparently most of us have had it at some point in our lives so chances are you would have built up an immunity anyway.
My DS had it when I was in early pregnancy. I had looked after kids with it and have worked at the Childrens Hossy so I was fairly certain I was immune. I just took myself to the doctors and had an antibody test. If they don't know what it is (and many don't I found out), tell them you want an immunity blood test for human parvo virus. I'd probably even give your midwives/caregiver a call and get them to write you a path form.
Most people in the community have had some contact with this disease previously and are therefore immune, even if they've never had it.
It has a really wide contagious period that is generally before the rash comes out.
My sister's daughter also had it in her third tri but as far as I know, they just checked her immunity and told her to keep an eye on any symptoms. Your bub is fairly well developed. I was concerned about high temps in the first tri but by the third tri I think you're pretty safe. All organs and brain are developed and bub is just weight gaining.
Will call the midwives tomorrow and see what they have to say!
Wow, the things you find out about when you have kids! I swear I just looked at the Dr like he was making the darn thing up! Seriously, Slapped Cheek...what a weird a$$ed name for something!
