    rolling in the cot

    Hi there,

My DS learnt to roll in the cot. Now when he goes to bed even when he is really tired he rolls over and then cries. I roll him back again and we do it all over again and again. This happens both day and night. He normally self settles (yes we are lucky) with minimal fuss and usually takes a dummy to put himself off to sleep.

Does this happen to other people, and what do you do to work with bedtime (night and day) and rolling?

We didn't have this problem but ds was always a side sleeper and when he was NB we didn't want him rolling on his belly so we rolled up a cloth flat terry nappy ) so it was a mini towel and tucked it in front of his belly and one on his back and he could move but not fully roll if that makes sense. Your ds is a bit older so that may now work?

I've had this problem with both sons - I use a product called the safe-T-sleep. If you google it you should find more info otherwise send me a PM

Roses - I might look into the safe-t-sleep. Is it similar to swaddling?

DD2 started doing this a couple of weeks ago. She would go down on her back, roll to her front and wake herself up.
I stopped trying to stop her rolling, and after about a week, she will now roll onto her side or tummy while asleep and not wake herself up. Problem solved! lol
She can sit herself up and will move her head around etc, so she is happy, I am happy.

Lisa B - it's basically a long piece of fabric that goes under the cot mattress and then up both sides and velcros around their tummies. I use it as I still wrap my DS2 (6 months) but will probably retire it around 10-12 months when he goes into a sleeping bag.

I found with both of mine it was just a stage, and that I just rode it out for the week or 2, and then like Limeslice said, all of a sudden they learnt to roll and not wake themselves up.

Thanks guys. We have gone back to swaddling and he seems to fall asleep really quickly when swaddled and doesn't roll.

The problem seems to be when he is first put in bed and before he goes to sleep rather than rolling in his sleep.

Roses - I will look into the safe-t-sleep if the swaddling begins to fail.

    Thanks for your suggestions!!!!!
