Unhappy Persistant Fever - What do I do?

    Hi All,

My 15 month old DS has had a persistant fever for the past 2 days. It comes down with panadol / nurofen but as soon as that wears off its back to 38.5 - 40'C. Last night it was 39.6'C and he wasn't happy at all.

We went to our GP yesterday who put him on Bactrim (Antibiotics) and diagnosed another ear infection. He hasn't been eating much at all, but he is still drinking most of his milk and some hydralite we've been giving him as recommended by the doctor but definitely not as much as usual.

Anyway, it's been 2 days since he started getting this fever. I'm not sure what to do. Do I keep giving him panadol/nurofen? Do I wait for the antibiotics to start kicking in?

What do I do next if the fever doesn't break? Take him to hospital? What will they do that I can't do at home?

    I'm just worried

Thanks for any advice you can offer..

i would keep giving nurofen, its only a day since you got the abs, they need time to work. his temp is high, so keep a close eye on him (im sure you are) can you get the gel pads to go on his forehead? they are good- but a cool facew cloth helps too

sounds like my DS at that age, we went to four different GP's and his fever was constant for over a fortnight. the panadol helped but then it came back up, FINALLY one doctor decided to actually look in his throat and his tonsils were green! thats why he wasn't eating or drinking either, has your GP checked in his throat, alot of docs don't seem to think of it at such a young age, even though they put everything in their little mouths!

My DD has the same thing going on, started Monday night! Just had her checked out and they said viral, one ear and throat bit red but not pussy. High temps, not eating, clingy bub...

Hopefully it breaks soon for both of them

    Thanks everyone.

DS's temp was high again this morning (38.7'C) so called our GP who said to give him 24 more hours as no new symptoms had emerged and he was still keeping fluids down. Hopefully the antibiotics should kick in soon.

    Will keep you posted!

My LO's temp is mostly back to normal now, but she is a cranky cranky baby. She is eating some breakfast now, but wasn't interested in much yesterday. She is tantrum-ing and throwing stuff often, falls over at least twice an hour and then cries and comes for cuddles. That only lasts a little while before she goes back into cranky baby mode. Not much nappy action so that is probably not helping. If she not better by Monday, will take her back to dr.
