    Question Pneumonia

MIL is apparently in the process of being admitted to hospital with pneumonia (currently getting scans done), but i had a few questions.

    1. Is it contagious?
    2. If so how easily is it spread - ie. she came to the Dora show with us Saturday would the girls be at risk?
    3. Is it safe to take the girls to the hospital to see her tomorrow?
    4. Once hospitalised is it generally a quick recovery?

I hope she's ok, her back has been playing up and she seemed a bit odd on Friday night when i saw her, she was tired and sore Saturday aswell but she didn't seem 'sick' just sore.

Pneumonia itself isn't contagious but the particular virus that caused it might be.
    The girls should be fine.
It's probably best to check with her doctors about whether it's suitable for the girls to visit.
Generally yes depending on her pre-existing health and co-morbidities. They'll pump her full of some strong AntiBs and keep getting pictures of her lungs. She'll probably feel like crap for a bit though.
Hope it's gone soon for her.

    Hi
it isn't contagious but if she had a virus as well which is often the case then that part is obviously.
i had it earlier this year and asked my dr at the time if it was contagious coz my new nephew was due and i wondered if i would be allowed to see him
i didn't have to go to hospital but i had a week off work and was just basically in bed resting that whole time on antibiotics and other stuff.
it took a good 3-4 weeks though to fully recover. its very exhausting coz you just can't get a decent breath in.
mine also came on quite suddenly too. on a saturday night i started feeling like i was just a bit off and had a little cough. sunday coughing lots. monday could barely move, felt ill, could not breath, no energy at all.

    hope she feels better soon.

I googled it as i wasn't entirely sure.

People often ask, is pneumonia contagious? Will we catch the infection if we come in contact with an infected person? Pneumonia is a life-threatening infection of lungs. However, pneumonia itself is not a contagious disease. But bacteria and viruses that cause pneumonia can be contagious. People when exposed to infection may catch the symptoms of normal cough and cold symptoms. It is not necessary that each person, exposed to cold virus or bacteria, develops pneumonia. It depends on the susceptibility and immunity of that individual. Transmission of infection may occur due to direct exposure to infectious secretions.
My brother got it when he was 4 and became very sick, he almost died a few times.

    Hope she will be ok.

My DH is currently in hospital with it.
Pnemonia itself isn't contagious but the cold germ is.
My girls haven't been able to have contact since last Wednesday when he was diagnosed. (fingers crossed for tomorrow)
Re. recovery - depends on how bad it is and how quickly meds will help it.

    Hope she gets better sooN!
