Complete Placenta Previa & prem babies??

Im 24 weeks & 2 days pregnant. Today I woke thinking I'd wet myself in my sleep when I got up to look it was blood, & a lot of it. we went to the hospital. I was given a steroid injection & will have another tomorrow to help mature the babies lungs. My OB is hoping that it will settle & that we can go to at least 28weeks. He believes it will continue to be an issue & as I'm early still in my pregnancy concerned the bleeding will get worse with each bleed.
Does anyone else have this condition or had it & when was the baby born??
    I'm on bed rest.

I don't have any personal experience with placenta previa, but I wanted to bump this for you and offer some of these

I hope someone pops in with some advice and reassurance for you.

I'm sure mad4e just had a bub after PP. Her little girl went quite a distance too. Maybe PM her?

As someone with much bed rest in her past Sit tight little guy. The world isn't ready for you yet.

A close friend of mine had exactly your issue, spent some time in hospital at approx this stage and went home when stabilised. She was hospitalised again at about 32 weeks after more bleeding and spent just over a month there before her DS was safely delivered by c/s at 37 weeks. He is now a very healthy, happy five and a half year old. His little sister is almost three and Mum had no PP with that pg.

    hi bex,

i have been in your situation and know how scared and anxious you must be feeling! i was further along then you but still understand how scary it is. i found out at our 20 week scan that we had a complete previa. i started spotting at 30 weeks then had a big bleed at 34 + 1 weeks. my ob admitted me to hospital on bed rest where i was to remain. he was hoping to get me to 38 weeks where he would do a c section. unfortunately i had a bigger bleed 2 days later and my son was born that night. he spent 13 days in the scbu and then we were able to take him home. i received the steroid injections too which i contribute to the great lungs on him when he was born! he started screaming the second the ob pulled him out of me! he was not happy

i hope u have no further bleeding. its so scary. i am here if you ever want to talk! plenty of rest and dont lift anything heavy! keep us updated on how you go xx

    Hi Bex,

My situation is very similar to yours. At my 19 week ultrasound found out I had Grade 3 placenta previa and told to take it easy which I did.
I have had 5 bleeding episodes so far
    1st - 20 weeks
    2nd - 21 weeks 6 weeks
    3rd - 22 weeks 4 days
    4th - 23 weeks 4 days
    5th - 24 weeks 6 days

I am 27 weeks and 1 day today and have been on complete bed rest since my first bleed - at total of 7 weeks of bed rest (only allowed to go the toilet and have a quick shower) 4 weeks of which were spent in hospital. We had to have a very scary conversation with my obsterician after my 4th bleed about the possibility of the baby needing to be delievered if the bleeding continued - this bleed was the biggest so far, but luckily I was still in hospital when it happened.

I did not even think we would make it to 24 weeks considering how frequently I was bleeding but here we are at 27 weeks and 1 day and like you so desperately wanting to make it to 28 weeks. After every bleed we had an ultrasound to check baby and the blood flow to the baby from the placenta and amazingly everything has been perfectly normal each time.

My last ultrasound at 26 weeks showed that my placenta has moved and is now 10mm away from my cervix - so now a Grade 2. Had an appointment with my Obsterician and he thinks I will probably have another bleed again and like you said that it is likely to be heavier than the previous.

Unfortunately this situation is really out of our hands, the only thing we can control is doing exactly as the dr says and for me that is to continue with strict bed rest which I have been doing religously since the first bleed. And remember every day your baby spends inside you is greatly benefical to the babies health. I have been setting small goals for myself - this week it is to just make it to Friday without bleeding, this has helped me greatly as thinking i just want to make it to 32 weeks just seems so far away and impossible some days.

    Wishing you all the best
    Karen xx

No advice on previa, but I have had experience with prematurity. My little man was born at 31 weeks, but I was on bed rest in hospital from 26weeks. I am a member of the support group at my local NICU. If you ever need to chat, just pm me.
    Thinking of you,

    Hi Bex and kdmeddie,

I was in a slightly similar situation. With DD i had placenta praevia that at 20 weeks was half covering my cervix. I had no bleeding after 12 weeks until 29 weeks 4 days. Not too much but put in hospital for observation. No-one talked to me about what the situation would be if DD came now. I was given steroids. A scan showed the placenta had moved 1cm away from the cervix. After being in hospital for 24 hours I had a huge bleed and they discovered that DD was in distress so i had a GA and emergency c-section and was born 15 mins into 29 weeks 6 days. She spent 2 weeks in NICU and was home after 6weeks and 4 days. She is absolutely fine. HOpefully they will give you a proper run down on NICU and Special Care as it was so scary seeing it for the first time with our little girl in there. Would have been nice to have had a tour just in case.

Good luck and i hope your little belly babies stay inside for as long as possible.

Thanks ladies, I'm still in hospital but tomorrow after we do the NICU tour I'm allowed to go home. They scanned me today & I have vasa previa the good news is our lil mate is 880gms & a good size for 25 weeks. I have to be on bed rest at home & be positive to go as far as possible. But they said if I have another large bleed I will be hospitalised until I deliver.
I've been feeling ok about it all but tonight I'm feeling a down about it.
Possibly my only pregnancy & I feel I haven't gotten to enjoy it. But on. The other hand I know how lucky I am to even be getting a chance to have him!!

The things we have to go through...
Hopefully I'll get home & it will be all up & up from there & I'll be a very well rested mummy to a healthy happy bub's x

Hope your going well and you get to head home today.
My stepmum had PP with my youngest brother, she was on bed rest from probably around a similar time to you and he was delivered by emergency c/s after she had a massive bleed at i think 32wks.
He was tiny and had to be transferred to melb where he stayed for some time until transferred back to their local hosp, he is now a happy, healthy 8yr old who is taller than all of his friends and smarter than most kids i know
Hoping all goes well and your LO stays in for as long as possible.

    YAY at home
We did a tour of NICU today with a care manager. It was a bit scary but reassuring, how lucky we are to have such great health care. I feel so blessed to have all of your support on here it is helping me so THANKS everyone xx
I've felt a bit anxious today but it's great to be home with my hubby.
So here is to many weeks of being a couch potatoe & being a fatty with a 32 week +++ baby!

It's a tough, tough road Bex but every day he spends in your belly will make a huge, huge difference to the rest of his life.
    Hold on, lil mate!
We did 11 weeks of bedrest & got to 34 weeks which was an absolute miracle as we thought DS2 was coming at 23 weeks. The small goals help, have 24 hours without contractions, each week counting it off, getting to 28, then 30, then all the way to 34.
Good luck, keep us informed! Lots of sticky vibes for lil mate
