A friend's DS had discolouration of his top front teeth when he was a toddler. They never found out what caused it. It faded away and was gone by the time he went to Kinder. So weird!
I think my 18 month old has tooth decay in his top 4 teeth. He does night nurse, but otherwise drinks only breastmilk and water during the day. I think his diet is quite good, very occasional sweet treat but we brush at night with him. I took him to the dentist and she says stop night nursing straight away, nothing can be done at his age but preventing it getting worse.
I've read that breastmilk doesn't contribute to decay though, and also read something about a diet change that claims to allow teeth to heal themselves. Has anyone else heard of this? I feel like a terrible mum![]()

I really hope that's the case with DS

Both my girls have discolored teeth even though we brush morning and night (well most days) we are on tank water so i wonder if it's beacause we don't have fluoride OR if it's because they eat so much fruit.
DP's cousins little boy had to have his teeth fixed (he's 6) even though his mum is meticulous with his diet and his teeth brushing, the dentist said it was his milk before bed and the fruit he was eating every day and that parents should be brushing their kids teeth until they are about 10 as kids just don't do it properly or for long enough
Am hopiong my girls don't have teeth issues too.
oh hun, some kids just have cruddy teeth and theres nothing u can do about it.
i hope it sorts itself out xxx
I new of a girl a while back who's front teeth were discoloured and she told me it was because her mum was on antibiotics when she was pregnant with her. Don't know if that's true or just a myth though![]()
you should be brushing his teeth either with a flannel or baby toothbrush at least twice a day regardless of what he eats or drinks.
I was also told by my MCHN that BM could cause tooth decay because of all the natural sweetness but I figured its better for her to have the BF rather than fruit etc as the natural acidity in fruits can contribute to tooth decay. We started giving DD a sip of water AFTER her BF through the nights if she hadn't fallen asleep, to help wash away some of the BMmay try this as well??
My eldest has disgusting teeth. He has lots of decay, no matter what we do. Skybie is right, some kids just do have cruddy teeth! We brush his (he is 7 and we still do them for him) twice daily, he has a tooth moose, and still they are grose! My other 2, we brush twice daily and theirs look fine so far. Poor DS1 has had a tooth pulled out cos it fell apart after having a crown put on it, and he has had multiple fillings. It SUCKS!
Just try to make sure you brush every day twice, if not 3 times if you know he has bad teeth.
Dd was 2 when I first took her to the dentist she has discolored teeth. Dentist asked me if I give her tea?? Seriously say what?? Of course I don't.
My dd doesnt even get fizzy drinks AT ALL, not as a treat or birthdays or even if every other kid drinks it. She gets a teeny bit of juice and that's mixed 7/8ths to water!!
Then I figured out - she eats blueberries and strawberries almost everyday year round. They were stains and easily removed. But I felt so inadequate as a mum so I understand!!
Decay I'm not too sure but I did learn at the dentist the only non acidic drink is milk. Even water can be nasty on teeth.
Definately rinse after bm and flannel brush twice a day I'd say. But I do believe some people just don't have great teeth!
I didn't really brush my teeth till I was 12 and I got my first filling a month ago. So I'm lucky to have great teeth.
I wonder if you can get calcium supplements for kids?? Worth asking.

I've read the blog of another Mum who stopped night bfing because of decay in her two year old's teeth. It's just genetic, unfortunately, that some kids are more prone to tooth decay than others.
Did your dentist recommend any other measures you could take as well?
Thanks for all your advice guys
I just bought him some kids fish oil and multivitamin supplements. Apparently boosting fish oil and vitamin D can help, and yes calcium, too. Luckily he loves cheese and natural yoghurt!
I'm definitely brushing twice a day now, and giving him even more water after eating. I still feel a bit crap thoughMum said my siblings and I had the same diet as DS (no soft drink/cordial/juice, no lollies, lots of fruit/veg, eggs dairy and meat) and brushed once a day and I've never had a cavity in my life. I'm not sure why his teeth are bad

Rooey, dont be so hard on yourself over it. I've got 4 kids and 2 have absolutely crap teeth and the other two don't. Nothing was ever done any differently with any of them and it's just the way it is.
why do you think they are decayed? where is the discolouration??
tell me more and i might be able to help![]()
It's his top 4 front teeth, they are discoloured (yellowy-brown plaque looking) along the top of the teeth and the two front teeth look like they have holes in them

he may have hypoplastic enamel, has it recently formed? did the dentist say it was definatly decay? where are you located in melbourne?
What's hypoplastic enamel? It's been there for at least 6 months, but it was just a white line that looked like plaque. It recently started to get darker. No she didn't say it was definitely decay, but it was a quick look because DS was not cooperating!
We're in Geelong. Do you know a good paediatric dentist in Melbourne?
