Do you see an OB? I was explained that the strings can wear down and you may not feel them anymore, they are still there, I don't feel my strings anymore either.
The other scenario is yes it may have gone MIA. My SIL has had hers in for two years with no strings and just had it removed and replaced with another one under a general anaesthetic so they could locate the Mirena.
If you are going to have it removed soon anyway, it would be worth making an appt with your OB or GP (one who is familiar with how the Mirena works for the GP) and get them to check for you. They may suggest and US to locate it if in fact the Mirena has gone MIA.
My first one fell out The most common time for them to fall out is during a period.
You should use another method of birth control until you have it sorted out.
I would be asking for a scan to see where it is. I was never able to feel the strings on mine and it turned out it had gone completely into my uterus and was causing me a lot of pain so I had it removed under a GA.
