I've put this is the travel section as I a currently overseas in Asia.
I would appreciate advice from seasoned travellers or people familiar with the use of squat toilets. I understand the basic squatting part of it. How does one use the water hose thingy without getting water all over clothes etc? Is it hygienic? In other countries I've seen water in a bowl with a scoop. What does one do? How does one dry one's bottom after use or do you not? Also, how does one do the squatting thing without the clothes bunched around the ankles getting in the water all over the ground?
I have a bit of a dodgy tummy at the moment so have had a couple of episode of needing to use the facilities with urgency. Today I encountered a western loo without toilet paper but with a water hose. I used my last tissues instead but was worried what to do if I needed to rush again. I have now bought a packet of baby wipes to take with me. I have booked an all day tour out of the city tomorrow and expect to encounter more squat loos and may not have western loos, so I'd like some tips on what to do. I need the most hygienic solution.
I wore skirts, or took my pants off completely.
You get the hang of the right angle to lean at after a bit. ALWAYS carry tissues. I wash then dry with a tissue (check that the tissues can go in the toilet!) with the hose I ALWAYS start it pointing away from me, incase its a strong water pressure. Then I aim from front to back, then dry myself.
its then courtesy to rinse the toilet and floor incase of 'splashing'
If there is a bucket and scoop, try to pour it down yourself, without touching yourself with the scoop. if no scoop use your hands to scoop. then rinse well and dry with paper.
Carry aquim/hand sanitiser for before meals!!!
When my travel partners got a tummy bug and we had a long bus trip, they bought some 'concrete tablets' that gave them relief from the runs for about 6 hours. Not good for long term but definitely a good option on travel days.
Youre welcome I used to live in Malaysia (in Teluk Intan, halfway between KL and Penang)
I always wash front to back. And tissues are fine to go down the loo
