Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide? Help me decide!

We have access to some cheap accommodation deals so DH and I have decided a New Year's holiday is within the budget! DH says I can decide where, but we have to book our accommodation by Thursday.

What is there to do in each city in the first week of January with a 20 month old? Can we get by without a car for 5-7 days? So far I know there are zoos in each city, Sydney has ferries and Melbourne has trams, Fitsroy Gardens and Vic Markets!

Adelaide has wine regions (Clare, Barossa, McLaren Vale), Haighs chocolates and awesome beaches!

Yes, DH LOVES his wine! (Un)fortunately we did the wine regions when I was pregnant with DS - not sure DS would be impressed at being dragged to all those vineyards (much like me when I was pregnant and couldn't drink or enjoy the copious amounts of soft cheeses that seemed to be everywhere ).

Melbourne has plenty to do with young kids and no need for car if you stay central!

    Zoo
    Museum
    Botanical gardens (childrens gardens)
    Aquarium
    Vic markets
    Beach
Play centres (good 1 at harbour town)
Art gallery has a childrens space

I'd also do Melbourne. Very family friendly, lots of public transport, heaps to do and see.

I'm from Adelaide (and love it), but I also love Melbourne, there is so much to do, cos the population is bigger public transport is much more accessable, and everything is central

you'd struggle to see all the tourist regions etc in Adelaide without a hire car

So it's sounding like Melbourne is the go?! We were in Melbourne on NYE 2 years ago and I must say, I loved the city. DS will love the trams, the pigeons and the gardens, if nothing else!

Feeb - Where are the beaches in Melbourne? Is it even worth it considering I'm from the Sunshine Coast (i.e. BEST beaches in the country, lol! )

MummyNaomi - I think the transport will be our biggest consideration. DS doesn't like the pram, so the free trams around the city centre will be great.

    No-one for Sydney at all??!

Oops didn't see you were from qld lol. St Kilda and port melbourne have nice beachs.

Sydney is nice but there aquarium is no where near as good as Melbourne. Taronga zoo is awesome thought! But I think melb is even better all round lots to do with kids.
