Do capsicums from the fruit and vege dept have suicide seeds?

Mr5 bought some capsicum seeds home from a school fundraiser. He planted them but got a bit over enthusiastic with the watering and drowned them. Then he threw the seeds from a capsicum he was eating (weird kid chews on them like apples) in the box and they have sprouted. If I transplant them will they have fruit?

Hmmm... not sure. I think our capsicums are from seeds I bought, but some have lasted for so long that I can't remember. I do think we planted a few this season that I stored and I'm pretty sure those are from store bought fruit, so I'll let you know how they go. I think they have flowers?

They should. I've had capsicums come up from compost and they have fruited.

They probably will, Onyx. A lot of supermarket veg come from hybrid plants, and seeds can grow, but are likely to produce fruit which is not 'true to type', ie, not the same as the one you bought. You might, for example, get lots and lots of fruit but they'll be really small. If it were me, I'd plant them and take whatever I got!

You'll certainly need more than one plant to get anything. You could get something or you may get nothing, you'll just have to wait and see.

I had one capsicum come up in a pot plant - I didn't even really look after it and it produced a number of capsicum.

I guess peppers can self pollinate. I've known lots of people to grow chilies on balconies with a single plant.

Maybe there are some that will do that, but generally speaking you do need two plants to pollenate.

    Most likely not.
Not only is most produce you buy in mass market grocery stores (not talking organic stores or health food stores here) is a hybrid modification. The seeds that the farmers use are not meant for seed storing (they can also cost $1,000 a packet!). Additionally most of the fruit and veggies you get in the stores are picked unripe then when it's time to be put out on the shelves at the store they are gassed to "ripen" them. This means the seeds are juvenile and won't fully mature. You'll get sprouting, you might even get flowers, but I wouldn't hold your breath over fruit. Since the fruit and veg are gassed (mostly fruits but sometimes with vegs) they also don't taste as good.

I have planted capsicum seeds from the greengrocer before and ended up with stumpy plants about 25cm high (really thick stems though), full of flowers then only a couple of stunted capsicums. Really cute and they tasted ok, but not particularly useful!
