DS1 is now 2years and 3 months old. He has heaps and heaps of words and can put together simple sentences like "dog in the car" "mum put on pants" "car on truck" head went underwater" and "I did a poo"
But his pronunciation is pretty poor. He uses the same pronunciation each time he says a word but at least 75% of this words bear little resemblance to the actual word - I've just figured out what he is saying if I see him pointing to the thing while saying the word. So for instance:
Ella = aeroplane
Hemp mee = cement mixer
bu tur = bush turkey
bee bee = biscuit
gah = stuck
boot = milk (possibly from bottle?)
And names of common people
doe = Josh
ra ra = Grandad
Re ra = Andrew
Aba = Sophia
Should I be worried or will this fix itself in time?
I'm the only one that can fully understand him - DH and the grandparents can pick up a few words.
I read a great blog the other day about speech. From the guidelines I can't see that it's against them to post so I will, hope I'm not breaking any rules!
I think every child different. My first son had some pretty interesting pronunciation when he was little. He also had a habit of making up words for an object if he couldn't pronounce it. He also used to mix up letters like canpakes for pancakes etc. All is now sorted out now that he is 4. His speech is fine. Whereas my 2nd son has nearly perfect pronunciation, so very different. So I think they all learn in different ways.
my DS has done a similar thing - like apples being 'ummas' for ages. luckily he'd make the action of eating an apple so that helped me work it out i figured it was normal & would just repeat the proper pronunciation of the word after he said it - not as in you've got it wrong but more an 'yes, you may have an apple' sort of thing. most words have resolved themselves now & DS will be 2.5 years on 1 jan.
it sounds like your DS is making lots of different sounds so i would have thought that was a good indication that he's doing ok? a friend's little girl was a slower talker but would babble away & doctors commented on what a good talker she was. when my friend questioned them about that, they said the desire to communicate & ability to use lots of sounds was a great sign & the actual words would come in time
