How did you save for a baby?

I'm having a tough time saving up money! My baby isn't due untill Feb. but I want to be able to move out, finace my car and take care of my child. (along with the father) We both have $14 per hr. jobs, but it seem like saving isn't doing too much.

What are some helpful tips on saving $$$.

All change in a jar that can't be touched.

Sit down and work out a budget, discuss things you really don't NEED and put the $$ you save aside.

See if there is a better plan for mobiles etc, sometimes a little outlay at the start will save more later

We bought things here and there starting very early. We knew we couldnt afford to buy it all at once and I really wanted to be able to have all the necessities and some "fun" things so we made a list and started buying in order the most important of things for baby Violet.

    Now were complete

At the end of the day, open up both of your wallets and put whatever cash is in there into a jar. It's amazing what those $2 coins and $5 notes get wasted on otherwise. Even $20 if you can part with it.

Try not to use cards. Try to use cash only for groceries etc.

Get what you can second hand. A bunch of beautiful friends gave me so many clothes, toys etc for DD and it was a life saver

For when bubs is here, breastfeeding and cloth nappies have a stack of benefits, including being cheap/free

When you budget decide what you can afford to put aside a week and have that taken out the day you get paid just like another bill - don't even think about your savings account as 'spare money', just train yourself to think it doesn't exist. Even get yourself a separate ING savings account or something so you can't even see it.
