    Homemade Shampoo?

Does anyone make their own Shampoo and Conditioner? My skin is so sensitive and my eczema is so bad at the moment that I want to get back to the very basics!

    Please no moogoo recommendations

Is it too early to bump this thread

I've been asking dr.google and have found a few shampoo ingredients like lemon, baking soda, apple cider vinegar and cucumber but I think lemon and vinegar would be really harsh on my skin? Would still love to hear first hand from anyone who has made their own shampoo and conditioner

i haven't made my own but used to make my own face masks sometimes & my first thought was using oats - i just tried to google & got lots of recipes for dog shampoos i'm still inclined to think it would be a gentle cleanser for you though - they do put it in a lot of the (more chemical) shampoos/cleansers for itchy skin though, don't they?

Mmmmm have you thought about using no shampoo?!? There are a few threads on here about no 'poo and some people find once you get through the first few weeks your natural oils take over! Apple cider vinegar rinse is recommended.

You could also try health food shops for bases and add your own oils. Good luck!

Thanks girls. I was reading a no shampoo site and the recommended the lemon, vinegar etc. I just think with my skin it would not be that great until I clear I up with the GAPS diet next year. I am also thinking of the oat thing, especially in the bath for ds or maybe mixed in with some castile soap. I will try to find the threads on no shampoo on here too

Fwiw I wash ds in conditioner rather than soap as it doesn't strip the oils from the skin. We found a nice organic baby one at the health food shop - inner essence? Seems to help

Rolf - no moogoo suggestions. Um I'm out if I can't use that. But I am interested to hear that it doesn't work for someone?

Hey little Lara thanks for the suggestion, I've tried a few health food shop ones, they all start out ok but soon enough my hair is yucky. That's why I'm thinking of going right back to basics with home made shampoo and conditioner so that I know what is in it. This eczema is so bad (and my hair is so yuck) that I am seriously thinking about cutting it to just below my shoulders and going completely homemade/natural

Tegam yes I knew there would be moogoo lovers dying to give me advice on the wonders of moogoo lol. I used a full bottle of the shampoo and conditioner and by the end of it my hair was yuck and I don't think my skin liked it either. At first I thought it was a miracle but I wont buy it again unless my eczema clears up on the GAPS diet and someone gives me some to try out again. I also tried their antiaging face cream which ended up making my eyes puffy and inflaming the delicate skin under them leaving red patches and lumps. I do use the moogoo body wash though

FWIW Tegam I can't use it either. Makes me want to scratch my skin off.

Apparently one tablespoon of baking soda mixed well with one cup of warm water works well. And then apple cider vinegar and water as a rinse for conditioning.

I find the same thing with Moogoo, that after about 2-3 weeks my hair just feels so oily and gross. So that's how I know it's time to do a clarifying rinse with Apple Cider Vinegar, and hey presto! Lovely soft clean hair is back!

I will try baking soda and water with a vinegar rise

I use cedal soap, it's a bar and has coal tar in it.

I also use soap from a company called LUSH and have not had any problems

My hairdresser is using one that the cancer councill recommends for their patients.

When we were young our hair used to be washed with a bar of dog soap, think it was called Timid joe, and i never had any problems.

What type of hair do you have (oily, dry, combination)? Is your scalp flaky because it is oily or is it dry? Most of these things will have an impact on the type of blend best for your skin/hair. What is the pH of your skin/hair?

My mother swore by coal tar soap, my sister by rinsing her hair in beer every couple of weeks.

Keep away from anything that has a petrochemical base (if you can't pronounce the words in the ingredients then there is a good chance it is a chemical base).

    Quick suggestions
Bicarb mixed with warm water as a shampoo
Apple cider vinegar mixed with warm water as a conditioner

If you want a lather, then get some pure soap (soap flakes from the washing isle, just make they are 100% pure soap), a bit of glycerine. Soap into a bowl, boil some water (I use purified water), put the water into the bowl with the soap, then add the glycerine, let cool, put into a bottle. Don't have actual measurements at the moment as I'm at work & my notes are at home. Just remember that it will not lather as much as commercial shampoo.

Yes I do, onto my second bottles now. Actually now that I think about it, I have been going longer lately between apple cider rinses. Maybe my hair/scalp are adjusting to it? Interesting..

Lemon and vinegar aren't as harsh as they sound because our skin has an acidic Ph - products with a neutral Ph are actually not very good for it. If you use an apple cider vinegar and water it down it shouldn't be too harsh.

I know people who swear by beer but it's a bit yeasty so if you're prone to yest infections you want to steer clear of it.

Spodet, my hair is long and about half of it is dry down the bottom due to foils about 18 months ago and I guess my scalp has been oily since not long after ds was born. Thanks for your tips on what to use.

Onyx I was thinking of more so of the lemon and vinegar getting on my hands where I have eczema, to would sting really badly I kind of think bear would hurt my hands too. When my eczema clears up next year I will give the lemon and vinegar a go.
