so far ive been making, pureeing and spoon feeding the boys but I want more of a BLS approach but im scared of them choking, jackson doesnt handle lumps at all, he wont even eat porridge.
what do i cook for them? how can i store it (i usually make up 2 weeks worth of food and freeze it)
how do we handle the highchairs? the trays seem too far away itms they can just reach it. Any info on BLS would be very very much appreciated
The best thing about baby led solids is that you don't need to prepare food ahead of time. They literally eat whatever you are eating, be it meat and 2 veg, quiche or curry. Just make sure veg is tender not crunchy, and meat is soft and can be torn apart. For the highchairs I did get ones that had a tray really close to my twins so that reaching was not an issue.
I wouldn't give anything hard to start with. Soft things that are easy to chew. I gave my dd soft chicken and mince and then moved onto other meat as she got better at chewing. Spaghetti bolognaise was a great one. Salmon patties, meat balls were great too. Steamed veg sticks are great. Try something really soft first to see how they go with chewing rather than sucking. As for storing food our dd has pretty much always had what we have. I will cook a big batch of veg sticks and put some in the fridge. You could freeze small portions of diff meals easily.
meat is fine, they gum it to pieces then swallow. I would only avoid very spicy food (mild kormas are fine) but other than that just let them try different textures and flavours. Get rid of the spoons and they will learn hand/mouth coordination really fast.
we did BLS tonight, the twins had baked sweet potato, Jackson did very well needing a little encouragement to pick the food up but ending up eating lots. Lleyton on the other hand just sat there with food in his mouth dry reaching on it
I found it wasn't something they knew how to do straight away. It took a little while. It's a learned skill like everything else. It didn't seem like they were getting anywhere at first, but they don't need the food for nutrition at this stage so it doesn't really matter.
when I was looking into BLS I watched a lot of youtube video's on it, it was the best way to convince OH that it was ok and to learn the difference between gagging and choking. By this age DS was eating steamed brocoli, carrots, zucchini, bread fingers, anything that had a handle really. It did take a few goes but it wasn't long and it was the only way he would eat He never had purees or mush so they do get use to the texture.
