Have done it twice, with Qantas.

    We flew Syd-LA, Vegas-NYC, NYC-London, Lon- Bahrain, Bahrain-Cairo, Cairo-Dubai, Dub - Hong Kong, HK-Syd.

The airlines qantas shared with were, British Airways, Cathy Pacific, AA and I can't remember who it was with in Bahrain/Egypt.

We had no dramas, it was super cheap for the number of flights we did, and every time we travel, we are always tempted by them!

    Where are you off too?

We did this for our honeymoon.

    Melb - HK - London - New York - Vegas - Fiji - Melb

What did you want to know?

Our flights were code share with Qantas. We used points to upgrade to business class for the Melb - HK leg.

If I did it again we'd include Italy in there somewhere but we both love Italy. New York is fantastic.

From the UK flying East is cheaper than flying West(or maybe the other way round - it's been a while). I'm not sure if the same is true from Australia.

    Thanks all!

Is there a limit on stops?

Is there a time limit on using the ticket?

Once you pay for the ticket, Is there any extra flight costs? Or is that it?

How much should one estimate to save for a trip like this?

Sorry for 101 questions...prob be more to come aswell

Its really only a thought at the moment but I've always wanted to travel and am *thinking* of treating myself to a trip next year.

I want to go to Machu Picchu, Paris, New York, London, Rome, Greece, Bali, Hawaii and whatever else I can fit in I guess

We did it for our honeymoon too. We did Syd - Vanuatu - Fiji - LA (connection only) - San Francisco - Cancun (via Houston) - Amsterdam (connection to...) - Paris - Dubai - Cairo - Kuala Lumpur (connection) - Kota Kinabalu - Tuvalu (all in Malaysia) - back to KL - Melbourne.

We had to organise our own flight up to Syd. Easy to do, we used frequent flyer.

Dubai was meant to be only a connection but Emirates overbooked, apparently it's routine for them, they book their planes over capacity assuming some of the connections will be late or people will miss their flight. Our connection was late but we ran and made it just as they were closing the gate. We had boarding passes and our luggage was on but they refused us entry. We were initially furious but we then had two interesting days in Dubai - Emirates put us up and paid for meals and basic replacements for our luggage. We went to the indoor ski slope - very cool! Literally and figuratively!!

It was great for us. We has very particular needs and wants as we are scuba divers so we wanted to go to some fantabulous diving locations (hence Mexico, Egypt and Malaysia) and it was great that the fare was flexible enough that we could do that.

Not too sure about cost sorry as our travel agent did it all for us and we paid a package price - flights, connections, accomm, tours, etc.

Tips from me: get a good travel agent to help you. Ours was invaluable when we got stuffed around by Emirates - the biggest inconvenience for us was that we had the missed flight to KL plus two more connecting flights, a taxi and a boat connection that all had to be rescheduled as from Dubai we were heading to one of the most remote places we dived in - a little group of islands in Malaysian Borneo. The travel agent took care of it all - via email and text messages.

Good luck - where are you thinking of heading?

I don't think there is a limit - we had heaps of stops!

As for cost - once you pay, depending on how you organise it, that might be it - as I said above, our agent organized the whole package so we paid a lump sum to him and 90% of the trip was paid for. We needed spending money, some meals and some airport taxes that they charge you directly at the airport. Cancun, you suck.

    Sounds great Sara! Very exciting!

The other thing I was going to say is get travel insurance!!!!!!

Thanks OP...How long did you guys go for?

Yes I was thinking a travel agent might be the best bet.

I sent am email to Student Flights with the destinations I want to go to...someone is going to call me back in the new few days so I will see what they say.

I know I probably wont be able to go to all the places as it would take a fair bit of time to get around to them all. Plus I have 2 little girls to think of aswell. 2 weeks, 3 max would be do-able though.

Yeah it's tough when you have LOs to think of!! We desperately want to return to Fiji and Mexico and can't wait til the kiddies are old enough to come too!

We were gone for 10 weeks. Long time - it was the trip of a lifetime for us

Sara it could be anywhere from 5-10k. The more places you stop, the more it'll cost. Airfares alone will be a couple of thousand I'd say. Just be prepared!

    Okies...thanks hun.

Probably best to have a "reason for travel" this time I think.

For me this is a spiritual journey so I might just stick to the places where I feel this is going to happen..ie Machu Picchu, Bali, Hawaii...Then when the babies are all grown I can really committ to a decent trip.

With RTW tickets, you pay more for more stops. so 5 stops costs X, 7 stops costs Y, etc.

We also did internal flights that we paid separately for.

How many are going? Is it just you, the whole family or you & the girls?

We took 28 days which included 12 in the Uk. We made sure Fiji was our last stop, so we could relax at the end of the trip. We slept for 2 days in places like New York, there's so much to see & do, we did not stop. It was fun but exhausting.

Our trip cost about $20-30k 3 years ago. We didn't stint on things like accommodation though and that included helicopter flights, expensive meals. We mostly stayed in serviced apartments, which are better value than hotel rooms. But if you're backpacking, you can save a lot of money that way.

Work out what you most want to do. When I first went to Italy, there was so much to do it was difficult to fit everything in to the 9 days I had. I ended up following Michelangelo's greatest works, so flew into Rome, saw all the big stuff, took the train to Florence, saw the David etc, then train back to Rome. You could spend a month in northern Italy alone. I lurv both Florence & Venice. I haven't seen so many other great places though.

Btw, I highly recommend Turkey, especially Gallipoli & Istanbul. It's another huge country, but apart from the history, the food is amazing.

I wont be going with the girls, just me and whoever else wants to tag along. If I go alone, i think I will book a Contiki (or something similar) tour as I wouldn't feel comfortable taking my first international trip alone.

But I will be just planning and paying for myself pretty much.

    Thanks heaps hun

    Yes.

KLM and American Airways. Started in SE Asia, then Europe, UK, then home via the USA. Only had flights into Europe booked on the ticket (so my flight into SE Asia, Amsterdam), had 12 months to use it and booked the legs I wanted when I wanted them.

Contemplating another round the world when I go to Hawaii this year so I can go visit friends in the US and in the UK/Europe.
