    Help - My house stinks!!!

I know it's probably my morning sickness more than anything - but there is a smell in my house that I just can't get rid of. I'm just so sick of it!!

DF has scrubbed the oven and fridge for me - I thought it was the carpets but now I can smell it in the bathroom too. I've cleaned the floors and wiped every surface with disinfectant.

I'm tempted to go out and spend a fortune on air fresheners to try and cover it up because I cant figure out what else to do - except getting the carpets cleaned which really isn't in the budget at the moment.

Are air fresheners bad for me while I'm pregnant?

Any other suggestions to get rid of it?

I just want to feel comfortable in my own house - other peoples houses don't seem to smell

    Help!!!

Urgh, I hate house smells when pregnant.
We found the smells cane from the carpets so DH hired one from Coles and cleaned as much as possible. Also, there are carpet deodorisers that spray down a foam, we got ours from Woolworths, and they're brilliant. The vanilla one is the only one we've used and it smelled like vanilla milkshakes. Yummo! Lol.

Yep my house has a SMELL as well which makes me dry heave all day.

I bought a can of glen 20 and spray whatever room smells and it seems to hide the smell.

Is it the drains in your house? Myabe put some drain wash down them all?

Also I love candles. You have to get the good ones though to make your house smell nice. the Ecoya range from DJs is devine!

Thanks ladies - so many awesome suggestions!

I love the idea of carpet deodoriser - definitely putting that on the shopping list!

I hadn't thought about the drains - I've got drain-o here, might get DF to do that tonight coz it's pretty strong stuff!

I have been using candles the last few days but they are old scented ones and aren't strong enough lol - but I do have incense and I hadn't even thought of it!!

Thanks so much - I knew you lot would save me I am doing groceries this afternoon and I'll grab some pretty smelling stuff there.

If you think it might be carpets, I've heard sprinkling with bi-carb, letting it sit for a couple of hours (maybe go out with the munchkin) then vacuuming can help - the bi-carb absorbs smells really well. Worth a try if you want a less heavily perfumed option

This works really well. My mums house smelt really musty when we first moved in as kids she did this trick and the smell was gone

The drains are another that can really stink. Mine had to be cleaned out big time as they were GROSS! and smelt horrid.

Our house stunk also. It turned out to be mouldy gyprock you couldn't see on the ceiling under a timber beam from a water leak. I used to cook lots of cakes, roasts and use pineclean to mask the smell lol

I would start by getting your DP to do the carpets with a hired carpet cleaner from the shops.

Then I would give all the drains a good squirt with either Glen 20 or that Vanilla fridge spray. The key ingredient in these is the alcohol that will kill any nasties instead of just adding another layer of smell over the top. If your pipes aren't draining well then get some of that actizyme stuff - works better (but more slowly) than draino and no nasty gases released. Then keep up with the spray once a week or so to keep them nice. This has worked so well for us, we had problems for ages after the tenants moved out (dunno what they put down those drains) but the alcohol based sprays made allt he difference.

Also - IMO far better to keep your windows open to let fresh air through every day than adding in horrible chemical scented doo-dahs into an enclosed breathing space!

I had an aversion to the smell of DPs aftershave. And bacon.

I suggest incense, or those lovely 'melts' you put in an oil burner. I get mine from 'dusk' if you have one near you. I bought 2 melts over a year ago and both still smell amazing, and never seem to 'run out'.

This might be a strange question - but when was the last time you washed your hair? I find smells stay in my hair and it's that I often smell

Wash the curtains perhaps too if it still smells to you after all that!

Sprinkle bi carb of soda on your carpets, leave it overnight and vacuum up in the morning, it is cheaper than those commertial carpet fresherners.

And if none of that works, get DH to go up into your roof space and look for a dead rat or mouse.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I'm starting with the carpets and working my way through them all until it's gone lol.
