I have a gym membership which has been getting cobwebs on it since a few weeks before finding out I was expecting. It's bothering me that I'm not using it but I have been so exhausted that the idea of working out makes me just want to pull the bed covers up higher lol
I can remember the instructors asking if anyone was pregnant before starting the classes, so does that mean its still ok to do them?
I'm not very fit at all - and I have definitely been more short of breathe lately - but I would like to keep using my membership and be increasing my fitness during pregnancy if it's safe.
There are some proper fitness instructors on BB, so hopefully they will be along shortly.
As long as you stick within your limits, don't get too hot, don't overstretch and no sit ups, then it should be fine to go to the gym and do some of the classes. I did low impact aerobics and Bodypump till 34 weeks. Prior to pregnancy I had been going regularly, but then my gym shut due to flood damage from when I was 10 weeks till about 26 weeks when I went back to the gym.
Check out the Les Mills website, I think they have some info on there for pregnancy modifications.
i think you're officially meant to get your doctor or ob to okay it first, but in most cases i believe it's fine. i'm overweight & not particularly fit but i have still been going to the gym. the instructors at my gym are very well informed & i asked them to do me a program suited to being PG, which they did. i also do a circuit class that is geared towards mums with children but the instructor will tailor to PG women (and she has 2 kids of her own which makes it even better) i.e. she will exclude or change exercises depending on whether someone is PG & change them through PG as well. she's happy for me to keep coming along for as long as i want - even if i just basically do my own thing. actually, come to think of it - besides DP & doctors, the people at the gym were the first ones to know i was PG!
fwiw, i've found that i do get really tired after a class but it feels good at the same time & i'm planning to keep going. a friend of mine kept doing the circuit class till she was about 38 weeks (albeit mostly just doing some walking & stretching).
As long as you are not starting new exercise and do not let heart rate get too high and do not allow yourself to get too hot it is fine.
I stopped when I was preg as I was paranoid about a MC as had 1 previous so was doing everything possible to be careful even thought I knew I could continue.
I know people who have continued training and running etc right up until day before they give birth!!
Classes are great as instructors will tailor exercises to you.
Thanks for the replies - ill have a look into the Les Mills stuff before I go in.
I'm going to go in tomorrow morning after school drop off and have a chat with them. There is a pump class on Friday mornings so I'll see what they suggest - and maybe ill just have a walk on the treadmill or something if that's going to be too much.
