I'd like some advice with regards to my almost 10month old DS.
He really enjoys his food. I make it all myself and he has a large variety of foods each day as well as his formula too.
I'm just wondering if his behaviour is normal. He gets really whingy ('really' whingy) when he sees us in the kitchen. He knows there is food in there and he wants it. Also when we feed him and he has the last mouthful he starts crying. Even when it's just a between courses, he cries. He always seems to be hungry these days and I think he would eat until he explodes.
So my questions is: Is this behaviour normal for a baby this age? What can I do to stop the negative behaviour with regards to finishing a meal or having tantrums for food.
An example of his daily food intake would be:
3 bottles of 240mL formula
Water
1 x weetbix with sultanas
Eggplant, broccoli & Carrot with some ricotta cheese
Strawberries
Toast with Cheese
Watermelon
1 x plain cruskit
A little chicken and veg for dinner
This seems like alot of food to me but maybe it's not enough. I just don't know. He's a good size boy though so I guess I'm more worried about over-feeding and his tantrums with regards to the food.
Sounds about what my DD2 eats. She eats lots and hasn't cut down any BF's, lol. Are you doing BLS? Maybe give that a try if you're not. We do BLS here and it's easy then to know when they've had enough because they are in control iykwim. I just keep giving her food until she doesn't eat anymore or keeps chucking it down.
Thanks Heaven, We do 90% BLS but my fear is that when the food is gone I'm just going to keep giving him more and more and more because he will never stop eating. LOL. So for example if he ate the whole sandwich, I would then give him fruit and he eats all the fruit then what do I give him? Something different, more of the same? I like to try to balance the food I give him so I don't really want to give too much bread or too much fruit at one time.
I would just test it out. Just keep feeding him and see when he stops. That's the whole idea of BLS anyway I think, so they learn to control it and they learn when they are full, etc. Maybe he just really is that hungry, lol, or maybe he just really loves his food and doesn't know when to stop and needs some practice I really don't know but that's what I'd do. I know some times my girls have eaten crazy amounts of food that I thought would surely make them sick but they weren't! When DD1 was 9 months she ate all her dinner, then some watermelon, and then a whole mango!
He sounds like he's a good eater! I say, if he wants more, give him more! I'd be adding more veges (e.g. sweet potato, potato, beans, peas, pumpkin, zucchini), yoghurt, cheese, beans/legumes (protein!). Try cream/cottage cheese/avo/hommus on the cruskit maybe...
