DH & I are having a discussion (for want of a better word) about TT DS for wees on the loo.
I'm happy to have DS sit for everything on the loo. DH wants DS to stand to wee.
DH has insisted that DS stand recently and I think that DS now has stage fright as he would happily sit and wee on both the loo and potty. Now he doesn't want to use the loo at all (or the potty much for that matter).
I think that DS hasn't quite got the idea about standing for wees and I'm quite happy for him to get that later and continue sitting for now.
DH is worried that DS won't be TT before the next one is around (due April). I'm not too worried either way. I'd prefer DS was TT but not stressing if he's not as his eczema has been playing up lately as well.
I will admit I haven't gotten around to reading up on TT (been meaning to go to the library and borrow some books but haven't had a chance without DS as he probably won't let me browse the shelves if he's with me.) DH hasn't done much reading about TT either.
DS shows some signs of being ready - happy to use the loo/potty at times, has dry nappy for a few hours during the day, loves going to the loo with both of us.
Have TT two boys. Started wees and poo on the toilet sitting down first up. If they were outside, they would wee on the lemon tree standing up with help from DH.
We didn't worry about standing with wee until they were confidently TT and then they were taught by DH by him weeing with them in the toilet.
You can also put a table tennis ball in the bowl to help the aim when the time comes.
I think a while back in another thread someone mentioned about struggling to know what to do if they needed to do both at this age, so it was best to initially teach them sitting down. I think it was butterflywarrior, she explained it really well.
We did it really slowly. DS was over 3 before I really started to TT. We went straight to the toilet using an insert seat thingy to make the seat seem smaller for DS.
I would really only put a pull up/nappy on him for his nap or sleep at night. At first he would wee sitting down but OH taught him to wee standing up by doing it with him outside and in the toilet. He didn't really stand up until he was tall enough to reach the bowl (ITMS) and we TT at night mnths after day TT when he really had that down pat.
We're just in the process of TT DS2. With DS1 we used a seat with a step incorporated into it and he learnt to sit down first (after mastering the potty for a few weeks beforehand). I remember another mum making a passing comment at a party once, that she was surprised he wasn't doing stand up wees? pfff. He eventually graduated to stand up wees, standing on a single step and I think we had less mess this way, as he'd already got the whole toilet thing and was taller by this stage. I found if you go out and there's a public toilet (disabled toilets seem to be really high) that stand up wees without a little step are impossible and it was much easier getting them to sit on the seat and aim downwards. There weren't any issues getting him to swap from sitting to standing - he just showed interest one day and we gave it a go with lots of high fives afterwards.
Each kid will be different. Our DS2 is currently refusing poos on the toilet and wants his nappy back on. We didn't experience this with DS1, but they're TT at different ages.
Good luck with it all
DS has been TT for just over a month - he wees and poos on the loo and sits down for wees. I want DH to teach him to stand up soon so DS can wee while we are out and about (under a tree if necessary if we are not near a bathroom), but for now he is successfully TT'd so there is no rush. Also DS is very short, so he'd need to stand on a stool to reach his willy into the loo anyway
I think your instincts are right Leckert, you know your DS's comfort level. Also, We used the 3 day method, I have an ebook which is pretty quick to read through, we found it fantastic (a very supportive method based on rewards)
I found standing was just something that happened when he was ready. We TTed with no pants for ages so he was cool to sit in the loo but if he wanted to go outside I just encouraged him to really spread his legs lol. My DH lives away so he didn't have anyone else to watch. Then all of a sudden after he had been TTed for a bit DH was home for an extended weekend and he would watch him....then he could just do it. how, but it def wasn't something we 'taught'.
