What's the first thing to do?

I don't want to go nuts and pack everything, especially as we haven't signed the contracts yet (and then a 30 day settlement). That will probably be next week.
But, what is some things I can do to 'ease' into packing??

What's the first thing you packed?? I've got a few things I can do, things we never use but I'm really at a loss where to start.

DH and I don't have an abundance of things, really. Another reason why I don't want to pack too early.

Not expecting to move til end of March/start of April.

I'm so excited and just want to be in the house already.

You are so lucky that you don't have much, make the most of that because the older you get and as your family grows you just seem to accumulate more and more 'stuff'.

This is how I do it and we've moved plenty of times now:

I always start by packing my books, dvd's, photo frames and ornaments etc. Then I move into out of season clothes, and the linen press only leaving the towels etc that you know you can live with if everything else is packed.

Start going through the pantry and throwing away all the things from the back that never get used. Go through the cupboards and start packing most of those things leaving just the basics.

Then as you get really close start packing room by room and just leaving the boxes open in case you need to get something out of it.

Make lists as to what is in each box for ease of reference.

Hope it goes smoothly for you.

What about linen? like winter stuff that you're not using now? That's one of the first things I got sorted and out of the way.

    I'm not much help, sorry.

    How exciting

Books and DVD's, board games, game stations.
    Excess linen (we have heaps!)
Out of season clothes/clothes your DD has outgrown
Excess crockery and cutlery, pots and pans (we had heaps!)
Toys that dont get played with or that kids have grown out of
    Photos, vases , decorations, paintings.

I also kept a couple of bags in one room to go to charity as there were quite a few things we didnt need anymore.

I also sorted through toiletries and tried to use up all the half bottles of shampoo/bubble bath etc.

sorted the pantry out and used up pantry items and started eating our way through the meat in the chest freezer.

Kept a pile outside to put things in for a last minute dump run

Even if you don't do too much packing yet, I'd recommend sorting through things and chucking out rubbish and things you don't want. Don't let your bins go out each week without them being full. I'm often slack and start packing too late which means we end up having to pay to take extra rubbish to the dump (or end up packing stuff I don't want and then try to get rid of it once we've moved).
