    Question Next stage formula question?

This is a question for a friend, her DD is 4 1/2 months old and she says she needs to move to the next stage formula soon.
She is on Aptamil (sp) and is wondering if it's ok to just switch over to the new one, or is it better to sort of wean on to it?
She's worried about it upsetting her little tummy if it's a cold turkey type change.

I use a different brand (s26 gold) and I just moved cold turkey. No problems with my LO however each baby is different.

My DS1 was on formula from 5 months.
If you are changing from birth formula to 6month+ formula in the same brand it is fine. (as it's basically the same formula)
It's only when you change brands that it really needs graded changing.

I used formula for top ups from early on (low supply and many BF issues) with DD1 then full time for about a month when DD was 11.5 mths old and I only ever used the Step 1. I was told by our MCHN there was no need to switch and the Step 2 often gave babies constipation and tummy upsets due to the higher levels of iron. So my advice would be to just stick with Step 1.

I actually just read an article that said something very similar. Apparently in some countries (I think it was Sweden they mentioned?), they just give their FF babies the same formula from birth until weaning. The concept of changing to an "older" formula is foreign to them.

Aside from that, if your friend wants to change, I'm pretty sure most of my formula-feeding friends have started by replacing one feed a day with Stage 2, then another, etc.

DS is still on the first one. My gp told me just to stay in that till the change to cows milk after all the trouble I had with trying to get one that worked for him. We did try the #2 formula but he stopped sleeping again. It's something to do with either the whey or caisen.

I'm another one to add that i too was told by my GP that it is not necessary to change. More of a marketing ploy than anything else

I wondered if it might be a bit of a marketing ploy myself, I thought there may be extra iron too. Her DD has been a bit prone to constipation so that may upset things if there is more iron.

The NHS baby book here in the UK says there is no need to go to the 'next stage' formula at all and that Stage 1 is suitable for babies till they are one when it is assumed they will start on cows milk.

So is the next stage formula more expensive? Or is it the bridging formula to keep parents in the "next stage" frame of mind so they can push the toddler formulas which they can advertise and make more $$

A bit different here but I found my DS was better on Step 2. It was a bit 'heavier' and helped him sleep better.

My brand is the same price for Step 1 and 2.

The second stage ones contain more whey which can help string out feeds longer in some kiddies but if you are ok with the one you are on then it is fine to stick with it - there isn't really a nutritional need to move.
Ours were the same price but the scoop on stage 2 was larger so you were using more for the same amount of fluid iykwim - very sneaky of them!

Willow - why is she changing formula? Seriously, there's no need to change formula - the different variations are a marketing ploy (they can't market formula for newborns, so they make staged formula and market that to get the brand awareness out there. ) - my MCHN also tells me this!

She's changing to the next stage formula (same brand) because it say so on the tin I would imagine I tend to agree about the ploy(as per my previous post)

, But thought I'd check here as I'm BFing this time round and have no knowledge of the formulas these days.

I'm pretty sure same goes for the Toddler formula that they market. It's really not necessary for little ones who are on a good balanced diet.
