your prom / formal / social / deb / whatever

I'm watching Dawson's Creek, and there's a prom about to happen ... it's got me thinking and all nostalgic ...

so *your* senior dance: tell me about it!

who was your date? why? who are they to you now?

who was on your table? are you still friends with any of them?

    what did you wear?

how much do you remember about it?

    and the afterparty?

    share! share!

My date was a guy I'd been going out with for about 2 months, he was 4 years older and didn't really fit in with my friends, but was happy enough to let me have fun with my friends and dance with me when I wanted.

One of my best friends at the time had a before party, and we had a few champagnes. I remember getting to the hotel where the formal was held and having to focus on walking up the stairs to greet the principal on my way in!

There was an after party at one of the 'cool kids' houses (I was definitely not one) and it was ok, but to be honest I found it boring sitting around drinking and listening to music so loud that you couldn't here the person next to you speaking. But then I was always a bit square and nerdy!

The main thing I remember is how much I loved my hairdo, and the night before hanging out with my friends as we painted our nails, watched movies and just had a great time. To be honest, while I loved my formal (I was on the planning committee) the hanging out getting ready for it was more fun!

This July 1st will be 12 years since the big night! I can't believe how quickly the time has flown by.

    What about you nutter?

Also, was it the dance that was held at the Leery's seafood restaurant, or a different one?

I had a year eleven (2002) social and a year twelve "valedictory dinner"/ formal. Both times DH was my date, and I was his for his year 12 formal (same school as mine, a year later.) My year 11 one, we'd been going out a month. The day after his year 12 one, we broke up. Hmm.

Oh, and talk of deb balls still makes me sad/angry. My year 11 class voted to not make our social a deb (only me and my crush of the time wanted it!) and DH "forgot" to tell me I would be welcome to his though I was in the wrong year level

I suppose I should answer your questions

who was your date? why? who are they to you now?
As stated above, my hubby for both I vaguely recall asking him to come to my social while we were still friends, but maybe not... I can't remember.

who was on your table? are you still friends with any of them?
The planning committee in year 11 deliberately put me with people I hated or who bullied me. Sucked for them though, I was the only one with a date and didn't care. Year 12 was a family thing, so I sat with them and DH.

what did you wear? Year 11 - Beautiful purple dress with little cream roses around the bust. Year 12 - Black and white striped bodice with black skirt. If anyone has me on Facebook, I've just changed my profile pic to one from the social

how much do you remember about it? Quite a bit about both. I remember DH was patted down for alcohol before my year 11 social because he was from a different (and perceived "lower class") school Little did they realise they should have checked pretty much every GIRL'S bags (except mine!)...

and the afterparty? Not so much of an after party, but my parents took me and my (male) best friend to Crown Casino after our valedictory. I was still 17, so we went to the Galactic Circus and played arcade games until about five in the morning

    Nice!

Year 10 formal I went with my buddies. I wore a burgundy crushed velvet dress with matching lipstick *gag* and black strappy platforms.

Year 12 formal a slight improvement, date with an absolute sweetheart at the local S&C club. Wore a long black satin number and scary poodle ringlet 'do. Summer of 69 was our class song at the end of the night (where you hug everyone and pretend you'll still hang out all the time).

Being a good country girl, I was also a deb. My deb partner was a close friend so it was a fun night. We did a terrible job on the dance. As for the ensemble, Mum whipped up a beautiful white dress with a big, princessy meringue skirt - I loved it. After-party at my place with a bonfire and lots of bourbon and coke. Didn't feel very pretty the next day, especially after drunkenly pashing a total doofus.

Memories...like the corners of my mind...

    Year 12 Ball 1993.

I wore a long black dress, high necked extremely fitted. Back was completely cut out down to my bum and laced up with an animal print scarf - sounds gross but was actually very very "Sexy" and not a traditional ball gown. Up until that point my nickname at school was "ironing board" and "surfboard" cause I was very tall with no breasts. Lets put it this way, that night was the first time I wasn't called my nickname anymore! Somehow I had developed and it wasn't noticeable under our school uniform!

I was head Girl of my school so my date and I had to greet everyone at the door and hand them a rose. Bit dorky but the girls loved it.

My date was a guy who had left our school the previous year who I had dated briefly. We were very good friends, he was a lovely guy and he still had a lot of friends at school so mixed well with everyone. We sat with a group of his friends and their dates who I liked and was happy to sit with.

Ball was held at one of the upmarket hotels in Perth, The Langley. We had a Jag take us up to the ball and afterwards someone (goodness knows who after all these years!) took us to one of the afterball parties. We had a few drinks, made out a bit and he tried to put his hand down my dress but my dear mum had pinned it so much cause I wasn't wearing a bra that it was near on impossible! I reckon mum knew what she was doing secretly!

No idea how or what time I got home but do know that I had a great night. Now my date is a friend on facebook, still cute but like me married with kids. Still is a good guy too!

    sorry Div!

I went to my year 12 formal with a friend. I was dating my DH, but I specifically wanted to go with a good friend (who is still a good friend!!) rather than "some boy" who later down the track might not mean anything to me ... how wrong was I!! but I do have some nice photos with DH, who was there, and of course we danced together and were at the same table, etc. DH even took a friend of mine from another school, so she could come!

I'm still friends with almost everyone who was at our table 13.5 years on, that's something I'm really happy about

I wore a royal blue dress, fitted at the top, fluted at the bottom, with a split which started reasonably modest, but after way too much dancing, was slightly less modest as I tore it a little ... oops!

A friend (the one who DH took) paid for me to have my hair professionally done, as my parents didn't think of things like that ... and I got some free samples of make up from the chemist to do my face all perdy ...

I remember basically the whole night - it was fantastic!!

As for the after party, we had our own, at DH's place. It was a blast!

Hated mine with a passion. I had a huge zit outbreak on my chin which was red and Mum put me in a red dress that she borrowed off someone else because we could not afford a new one. so the zit outbreak was more prominent. I didn't take a date, wasn't dating anyone and don't really remember much of the night itself, after all it was 20yrs ago LOL. I had a friend on facebook put up a pic of her, myself and another girl a few months ago from that night. I untagged myself.

I went to my formal with a friend who I worked with. Our school rule was you had to have a date to attend formal, and you couldn't go with a same sex friend. I didn't enjoy my formal too much as I'd been on student exchange to Japan for a year the previous year, so I wasn't with my life long friends....

The table I sat at, to be honest, I don't even really remember too many people on it. The ones I do remember, well, their names escape me right now.

I wore a lovely (not) purple, long, straight barrel style of dress with white long gloves and a sparkly thin headbad. Oh God. My formal date is now a FB friend

I went to the after party... Had drinks.... Didn't really know the people who were there. Regretted it lol (nothing bad happened... just feel like I made a fool of myself)

Oh well.... Such is life, we move on. Just glad that is in the far, far, far distant past!

    School Formal 1991

who was your date? why? who are they to you now? My boyfriend...lost contact years ago!

who was on your table? are you still friends with any of them? A whole gaggle of B*****s....the group I was so desperate to be in at school but now I wouldn't bother! One was not even talking to me at the time and requested a group photo without me in it! I was devastated!

    what did you wear?
Emerald green dupion silk big puffy dress complete with silk roses on the shoulders. Think bridesmaid style dress!!! LOL My hair was a disaster. Everyone had been competing to grow their hair the longest and mine was down to my waist. So I wanted to show that off but also wanted an upstyle so I had a half and half style. The front part all up on my head in a bouffy upstyle with the back going down my back. Got my makeup done at the Clinique counter at Myers!
how much do you remember about it?
Not much apart from the humiliations from those cows and being slightly bored as it was a bit of an anti-climax after all the prep and the limo etc!
and the afterparty? Cannot remember going but an fb friend recently assured me I was there! I vaguely remember thinking it was a letdown after all that formality. Just cannot remember it really.

School Deb - A friend. Sounds weird but I rang him up to get the phone number if his mate that I was interested in but chickened out & asked him on the spot, he said yes but I think b/c he more felt obligated to. He was a nice guy but that was it.

I wore a dress my mum picked that on the rack I thought was hideous but it really suited me. My make up was done a Myer and my hair had jip in it, curles and pulled to the side - noice!

School formal - A guy I had a crush on. I think he did like me too but I was alot younger than him, so he didn't take advantage. We actually went as a group of friends. I wore a black long dress and had my hair and make up done professionally.

I can't remember much else. I know I didn't go to either after party but we did have pizza after the deb because the food was limited.

I didn't do a deb or prom thing but we did have Boatrace Ball for years 10-12 at our school. I went in year 10 and year 12, not year 11 though for some reason

Anyway year 10 I wore a silver snakeskin sort of texture fitted halter-neck dress (ok it sounds awful but it was 1987 and compared to the pouffee taffeta numbers it was up against, it looked hot!) and I went with a male friend. Had a great night, danced lots and made the guy who asked me to go and then un-asked me to take someone else totally jealous as I looked way hotter than the girl he ditched me for

Year 12 I went with another male friend (gay) and we also had an awesome night. I wore a black fitted, just above knee length dress with a deep V in the back which was my aunties from the 60's. Again a great dress for 1989 when you look at what he others wore. I think I probably got drunk before we went because I don't remember that much of it

who was your date? why? who are they to you now?

My date was a guy from my class - he came to my front door afterschool one day with a bunch of roses (from his mums garden) and asked me and I said yes.....however I also found out that some of my 'friends' had told him that I 'wanted' him (which I didn't) so perhaps he thought he was going to get lucky - he was disappointed if that was the case anyway!
He is a friend on fb who I haven't seen in 18 years! he is now about 4 times the size (he was always a weed, not so much now) and I am grateful we were just friends!

who was on your table? are you still friends with any of them?

We had parents at our graduation so I sat with my partners and my parents and I suppose a couple of friends but I can't remember who though. I still keep in contact with a couple of them, but am only actually friends with one who I've visited, etc over the years and we call each other every now and then.

    what did you wear?
I wore an emerald green silk halterneck dress that mum made with splits up both sides to the knee - white stockings (eeeek) and black heels. 90's style!! I had my hair curled and pinned up and took out about a thousand pins the next day.

how much do you remember about it?

I remember it sucked - that everyone was just itching to get to the after party and therefore no one danced or enjoyed themselves much at all.....really disappointing.

    and the afterparty?

Hmmm, well nowadays the school I went to doesn't allow after parties on the night of grad as it is a school day the next day - if students are found to have had a party, they don't graduate! But back in my day we were allowed and did.
I remember my partner getting totally off his face and vomiting everywhere and rolling in it - so charming, and he wonders why he wasn't 'getting any'!! I had a drink or two (I wasn't a drinker at all) and didn't get drunk. Some of my friends were tipsy but quite controlled. Alot of the kids were very drunk though. It was at one of the 'cool' kids houses and the parents weren't there.
This was before the lolly drinks of today - so basically the boys were on beer and the girls passionpop or green ginger wine!
I remember one particularly trampy (and drunk) girl making out in the hallway and the boy with his hand full on down her pants in front of everyone. Another very sweet and tenderhearted boy said no to his girlfriend as he wasn't ready. My friends and I ended up sleepingon the floor of the cool boys bedroom.
The next day we had to go to school to graduate. And my friends and I had to go to school on a bus - 30 min drive, given none of us had cars in those days, we all had to lay around school all day - some fighting off hang overs. Some interesting pictures that's for sure.
My friends and I did a run thorugh the boys toilets too - such daredevils!

hmm, I should probably answer my own questions!!

who was your date? why? who are they to you now?

my date was a male friend who I am still good friends with. I had made a rule for myself that I would not go to the formal with a boyfriend, as I figured that realistically, we'd break up at some point in time, and on the off chance it was a messy breakup, I didn't want to associate my formal with some douchebag ex boyfriend ... so I went with a male friend, instead of my boyfriend of the time (who is now my DH ... ah the irony!)

who was on your table? are you still friends with any of them?

all the people who were on my table, from my school are still good friends, except for one who has sadly passed away. the people who were on my table as dates aren't ... none of those relationships panned out.

    what did you wear?

I had my dress made by a friend of my mum's - it was a gorgeous royal blue gown in satin, tapered in at the waist to show of my flat tummy, and a reasonably high slit up the thigh ... it was extremely flattering. I loved that dress! I had a shimmery gold scarf / shawl thing that went with it, and white sparkly chunky heels. I was quite short, so the heels were quite high - 11cms ... no idea how I danced in them for 7 hours ...

how much do you remember about it?

a lot. it was a great night.

    and the afterparty?

my gang of friends had our own afterparty, at DH's house. it was good fun too! there were about 30 of us there.

Year 11 deb (1993 I'm old!!) was with a guy I was really good friends with in year 10 and I asked him in year 10!! I had a boyfriend by the time the deb came around and we both did our deb with someone else which was actually kind of nice!! I haven't seen him since the end of year 12! Gorgeous dress that my mum made!! My hair was horrifically short and bobbed and for some reason I thought curling it would be nice - was terrible!!

We had a formal in both year 11 and 12 - I remember having fun at the year 11 one and went to the after party but funny thing was nobody sorted an after party for the year 12 one so a few friends and I drove around in my friends car because she was the only one with a licence!!! I wore a long light pink satin skirt and singlet top thing from Portmans! All my friends wore suit type outfits which must have been cool in 1994!! I am friends with a few people on FB from school but never see any of them.
