    Night training

I'm wondering what the 'normal' age is for a child to stop wearing nappies at night? I know every child is different but most of the kids in my Mothers group are toilet trained at night now and my DS1 isn't. I haven't actually tried it yet.

He's 3 years 3 months and has been using the toilet on his own during the day for both wee and poo for a number of months now. He wakes in the morning with a very wet nappy but I'm not sure if it's from the whole night or if he wees upon waking.

Is he too old to be in a nappy at night considering how independent he is with the toilet during the day? Should I be getting onto it? How did you do it?

    TIA

Every child is different, there are 6 yo kids in DD1's class who still have nappies.

With my girls I waited until they asked to wear undies to bed, I told them they had to have 5 dry nights in a row and then they could. We had a chart to mark off the nights and then they had undies on after 5 dry nights in a row.

Also I made sure that they didn't have any drinks after dinner so cutting out the bedtime milk had to happen.

Oooh cutting out bedtime milk, hadn't considered that. My DD has just turned three and she's still in nappies at night.

I think I'm going to go with Nai's method.

He doesn't have bedtime milk but does have water with his dinner. It's been very hot here so I don't want to deny him water if he asks for it.
We've been talking about sleeping in undies at night instead of a nappy but he doesn't really seem all that interested! When he used to still nap he would sleep for two to three hours in undies and never wet the bed.

I might try the chart idea, thanks Nai.

I did them at the same time (day and night), DS is dry day and night now (I think he'd still be wet at night if we had a nappy IYKWIM). I'd suggest just putting a mattress protector on and taking the nappy off. Don't put undies on him at night (they can feel like a nappy) and tell him he needs to go to the toilet overnight and first thing in the morning. Might be worth using a baby monitor so you can hear when he wakes and take him straight to the toilet.

    Good luck!

my 22 month old hasnt worn night nappies for just over a month now, she hasnt had any wet nights so far she is great, some days she is fine, but sometimes will still have 2 accidents during day, more so at kindy .

it all depends on the child, my daughter doesnt have bottles or milk hasnt since she was 12 months old so that helps.

if they still have milk they can wake and be wet more, i stop water drinking around 6pm and she goes to bed at 730pm

It's not unusual for kids that age to not be night trained yet. What I did with my kids was to limit the amount of drink they could have from about 4.30 onwards - sips of water were allowed, but no large drinks kwim? Then I would start getting them to go to the toilet regularly in the 2 hours before bedtime and always make sure they go right before bed. Then I would get them up for a 'dream wee' when I went to bed, which was usually about 10.30-11pm and that was often enough to see them through till morning.

Well, I just thought I'd update in case anyone was interested

DS1 is now completely nappy free. We didn't use any rewards or charts, just verbal praise. For the first week we woke him and took him to the toilet before we went to bed at about 10pm but he didn't always need to go so we stopped. Now I sometimes take him to the toilet when I get up to feed DS2 at about 2am but not always.

He's been out of nappies at night for several weeks now and has only wet the bed twice so both he and I are happy with that

I put it off for so long because his nappies were so full in the mornings but obviously he was just weeing because he knew he had a nappy on. I should have started earlier and saved myself some money by not buying nappies!!
