Those with children on the spectrum or ADHD..

Just out of interest I'm wondering how many of you have used diet to help with symptoms? Have you noticed a difference? Did you have guidance or assistance from anyone when making the dietary/lifestyle changes and if so, who guided you?

some might disagree with me..... anecdotally I understand that some parents insist the diet and has helped.....

however there is not a lot of evidence to suggest one way or another that diet will benefit children with these difficulties - having said that, a healthy diet can only be good for ALL children......

check out the Positive Partnerships in Autism training website: autismtraining dot com dot au

There's lots of information there about evidenced based support for children on the spectrum.
I don't have any knowledge of specific research about the ADHD links or lack of - but my understanding is the research is definitely not clear.
I think I recall that there is more evidence for the benefits of fish oil - Efalex I think is one such brand that is supposed to help.... but I'm not sure how strong the research is....

    hope that helps!

We dont personally do anymore than we already normally do ie lots of fresh vegies, little to no processed foods etc Atm my life is already turned upside down by ASD, no way do I have the energy to invest in specialised food choices. I have yet to see a change in his behaviour on days he has eaten things like take away etc VS days when he hasnt eaten anything but fresh food personally.

I think Meow is using the GAPS method. Maybe pm her if she doesnt see this?

Ive heard about the fish oil but trying to get my ASD boy to take it is like forcing a shark to go vegetarian! Efalex has a good rap.

    Yes, yes yes!!

We're doing the GAPS diet and my son is making HUGE improvements! I 110% believe autism is curable and that my son will be free of autism within the next few years.

It takes a long time to start healing the gut and seeing improvements, it's not about food reactions per say (though autistic children do react to foods as they are unable to digest them fully) but it's about healing the gut so that takes time. You wont see improvements just by trying it short term. You also can't lump all the diets together and say sometimes diet works, because the diets are all different and I personally don't think any diet apart from GAPS really addresses all the areas needed for healing.

It is exhausting and I've found the past 7 months very hard, but I'm healing my son for life so it's flipping worth it! My son is a resistant eater so getting him on the diet was REALLY hard. I have force fed him fish oil and cod liver oil and he spat so much up we've ruined a lot of clothes, but he takes them easily now. It was worth the fight.

Read the book, best $30 you'll ever spend! There is a GAPS thread here you can look at.
