    What are the Chances?

So i had my GD test last Thursday and got the phone call yesterday that my sugar levels are high.

I had to go for the second test today so i am waiting on the results.

What i was wondering is, how many have had high levels first test, but normal results after?

Also, i dont fit into any of the "high risk" categories. Are you all the same or am i the strange one lol??

    Thanks

The first test can be affected by what you have had to eat in the previous 24 hrs, as basiclly it gives you a sugar load and sees what your body does.
Where as the 2 hr test is much more intensive.

Often people think they are being very healthy snacking on a lot of fruit when in fact it can send there sugars up

Many people have a high first test (GCT) and go onto have a normal 2nd test (GTT). So mus so that often some doctors will only order a GTT.

    Good luck.

With DS my 1st test was high and my 2nd test was normal. With DD1 1st was normal, DD2 both test were high - I had GD. This bub I've had the 1st test three times because of GD in the last pregnancy and it's been normal every time, no GD.
My sister is also pregnant her 1st test was high and her 2nd test was normal.

Pregnancy 1 and 2 came back with high first results first time and the second tolerance test came back fine. This time both were high and three weeks ago was diagnosed with GD.

So there is no rhyme or reason just depends on your body! All diet controlled at the moment so it's not as bad as I imagined it to be!

Little O what did your second test come back as? I know it was months ago now but I'm curious. I got my results today of the first test 9.9, so I'm off to have the second test thurs morn. I have definitely been indulging my not so normal sweet tooth lately and have been trying to offset that by loading up on fresh fruit juices almost every day so I'm hoping that this would have caused such a high number, and of course when I fast on thurs it'll be perfect

Last pregnancy my first test (GCT) was high, my second (GTT) was 'borderline' so I escaped a GD diagnosis. THis time the Ob just sent me straight for the long test (GTT) and my results were 4.7mmol/L fasting, 91.mmol/L after 1 hour, and 8.1mmol/L after 2 hours. SO I got the GD diagnosis two weeks ago. I was really shocked as I don't fit any of the risk categories (although I do had been diagnosed with PCOS in the past, but my weight pre-pregnancy and now are perfect, I'm 25, and don't fit the ethnic risk categories) AND because of my borderline test last time I had been eating really healthily, indulging here or there but generally very moderated and balanced. Luckily I haven't had to change my diet at this stage to keep under the limit of 6.7mmol/L (2 hours after meals), and am still able to indulge occassionally, the only thing I've had to change so far is spacing out the carbs rather than, say, eating a meal and having a treat straight after. Now I eat my meal, wait 3 hours, and then have something small after that time. Just to reduce the sugar that's loaded into my body at once I aim for 2-3 serves of carbs at my 3 meals and 1-2 serves of carbs for my 'snacks' (morning tea and afternoon tea).

bella12 - Watch the friuts and juices. As someone else mentioned, most people thnk they are doing the right thing by compensating with fruit and especially juices, when in fact the body just processes sugar as sugar, doesn't matter if it's coming from a piece of chocolate or a massive mango fruit juice, sugar is sugar (or I should say carbs are carbs, because the focus with GC is on carbs rather than just 'sweets' and 'sugar'). Of course, if you ate a mango, you're gonig to get the added benefits of the goodness of mangoes as opposed to negligable benefits from a piece of chocolate, but still watch the sugars and carbohydrates in the fruit/juice. If you had a huge juice in the hours before the test that would have had a massive impact on the results.
Most people also combine a fruit juice with a meal, which is going to spike your BSLs even more. I caved and had a green smoothie yesterday (banana, dates, chia seeds, almonds, baby spinach leaves, cocoa, combined it equals 2 serves of carbs) with my lunch (which was already 3 serves of carbs!), and my 2hr levels afterwards were shocking (8.3mmol/L). In hindsight I should have realised the green smoothie should have been a between meal snack to keep me going, but I had skipped my morning tea and was really hungry.

Bella12: I came back positive, but in the "no mans land" range. I had a first reading of 8.3 and then test two was 8.2.
I was able to fully diet control mine, and to be honest it wasn't too hard. I actualky think because mine was diet controlled it was a blessing in disguise because I watched what I ate and consequently didn't gain much weight and lost what I had gained pretty quick.

I was a big juice drinker too, and the dietician said I cOuld still have some but in lesser amounts.
What I learnt from it too is if I decided to have a naughty sweet and teamed it with a protein it didn't seem to affect my sugar levels too bad.

Let me know how you go x

Hey ladies. Got my results yesterday and second test was 8.8. So testing blood sugar three times a day but they are pretty confident I can diet control it kinda makes me watch what I eat cos if I get a high result I don't want to write down that I had a maccas feast! So I'll prob be on my best behavior food wise sounds pretty straight forward though to control so I'm not worried about it. Thanks for sharing ladies
