    What to give after antibiotics?

So DS has asthma (not officially confirmed til he's 2) and he has an infection (coughing, wheezing, runny nose, fever) he's been given antibiotics and I'm just wondering what I can give him after he's finished the course in order to restore normal gut flora? He's breastfed, so that might be all he needs, but thought I'd check to see if someone had any other options we could do as well.

His immune system is shot at the moment, he had chicken pox a couple of weeks ago and now this, plus DH and I are both falling over sick so anything that would help to prevent him catching anything new for a little while would be a wonder.

    Thanks in advance.

Sounds like all of you are going through a really rough patch. How about giving him a really good organic/biodynamic yoghurt. Not one of the sugar filled ones from the supermarket - one from your wholefood store. Also a few places sell probiotics for that age group but I haven't read enough about it yet to feel comfortable starting my DS on them yet. Maybe someone else can offer a suggestion about that.

I hope all of you are back on your feet soon.

You need a probiotic! You can get some specifically for kids from chemists and health food shops. They don't taste terribly nice, so your best bet might be giving him some jalna, vaalia, yakualt or other 'live' culture yoghurt.

You can get 'powder' form pro biotics. I just dab a bit on my breast before LO latch on. But I'm not particular if LO don't get the 'full' proposed dosage.

Kit my naturopath has given DD baby biotics which is in powdered form and you can just add to food or in a teaspoon of EBM. I get it from her but not sure whether you can get it from health food shop.

Thank you for the replies, thank goodness the boy loves yoghurt! I'll grab some good yoghurt and check out the health food store

Use a hardcore probiotic!! Don't use inner health plus. Baby Biotic is awesome.

I would also give high quality natural yoghurt and homemade or, if shop bought, unpasturised sauerkraut. Go hard with the cultured and fermented foods (eat every day) for at least 6 months.

And yay for BFing-keep it up! Awesome, living, probiotic goodness
