Implanon ...?

Anyone gone on implanon before? I've had it twice but soon after the insertion I had itching that drove me insane and a big red rash. It subsided after 2 weeks a little but was still there and my gp wanted to take it out... I really want long term contraception, a) because I've been advised not to fall pregnant within the next 18mos due to my c section and b) because of my pre eclampsia and how my bp is still shoddy 4 months after missy has been born.

I don't like the idea of a Mirena, and I'm hopeless with the pill. I don't want ANY accidents because it could affect my health like last time.

Advice please ?

I had implanon for 9 months at the age of 17. It worked well, no pregnancies.......... but I think that was mostly due to the fact I was spotting almost constantly. 3 weeks out of 4 I was bleeding, and after 9 months of that I had it taken out. I remember joking with my mum that it worked a little too well, as BF couldn't get near me if he tried LOL. Needless to say she was thrilled lol.

I think if you've already had issues with it in the past, perhaps it's not for you this time either. I still have a sore spot deep under my skin where the implanon was... 10 years on. It's not terribly painful, just bruised feeling and annoying at times.

Have you considered the depo shot? Just a thought. Good luck!

It was recommended that I go onto the implanting after more than 2 years straight on the depo shots. It had to be removed just 6 weeks later as I bled the entire time and it wasn't inserted correctly (I couldn't bend my arm up as it had been placed too close to my elbow iykwim)

I went back onto the depo shots then the pill to get my body regulating (I hadn't had a true period in over 5 years).

For the first time in nearly 6 years the depo failed me and I fell pregnant, but I found it much better than remembering the pill.

I also think if you had issues with implanon before it might be worth looking at other forms of contraception

I've had depo and hated the shots in the bum - the thing is that if you don't react well to it, then you can't remove it like you can implanon. I didn't mind the implanon, it worked for me. The mirena has worked better though as it's had less side effects (like weight gain) that I get with the pill / depo / implanon.

I was on implanon before falling pregnant with DS - had it in for a year and a half, the constantly annoying spotting subsided after about 6 weeks and it was fine. Didn't have any periods, no major side effects and my cycle went back to normal quite quickly after it was taken out.

I can't have the depo shot. I've had it before and it made me a nutcase. Worked well even after it had 'worn off' DH never came near me.

And I was Dr googling... (yeah yeah, I know...) And apparently a few red itchy blotches are a common side effect of the implanon? That was my only problem with it. Just the localised rash. Could have been from the adhesive the gp put on after the procedure or anything really.

How bad is the mirena? I hate inserting tampons let alone feeling for strings to make sure the mirena is in place iykwim. Plus the idea of a local down there... Ouch.

I have the merina and looove it. I didnt have a local and honestly the insertion did not hurt too bad.

I had the depo shot before and was constantly worried I would get pregnant. The only good thing was I did did not get a period. I was also told that the implanon was just a slower release of tha same contraceptive as in the depo shot.

I have the mirena and love it. You don't need a local to have it put in. I had mine put in at around the 8wk mark after birth. I got a script for it from my OB (a GP should be able to presribe one for you) and she put it in for me in her rooms. It was like having an invasive pap smear is the best way I can explain it. I had a little bleeding for a about 8wks after having it inserted until it settled down and stopped and has never returned. Bliss
You shouldn't be able to feel the strings, neither your DH. If you can feel them, you go back and get them trimmed.
I don't feel for the strings anymore.
I was initially not happy with it due to the bleeding for a while after, I am so happy I persisted. It's been wonderful for me. No side effects at all.
If you do get one, just one piece of advice...take a big bag when you collect it from the Pharmacist and don't panic, not all of that in the package remains inside you

I had implanon twice - it was the best option for me compared to the pill. I may have tended to be a bit more moody/pmt-ish, but overall it was great for me.

Ok. After reading that link from BB I am not getting the mirena. To have it in your abdomen ? Uhuh not happening...

I'm going to need to write a list lol pros and cons of each contraceptive lol. That or just not ever have sex lol *facepalm*

I had implanon, hated it. My periods were all over the place I'd go 6 months without one then get it 2 times in a month, another time it lasted 3 weeks, etc. It worked, I didn't fall pregnant, but it sucked having no idea when I would bleed.
Period pain was dramatically reduced, which was good. But overall, I wouldn't get it again.

Thanks for everyone's input. I have decided to get myself back on the pill. After literally weighing up the pros and cons, of each contraceptive. One by one lol. This would be the best for my body. DH has promised me to remind me every night
