My eldest DS is in Prep and is loving the program "Mathletics". The school has provided it and Cooper is really getting into it for his maths.
Unfortunately, he also wants to do "homework" for spelling/English as he is trying to learn to read. We tried Spellodrome (part of the Mathletics program) and Cooper loathed it. It was not child friendly at all.
We were recommended the ABC's Reading Eggs. Has anyone used this? Is it any good?
Is there any other english/reading programs available that your children have used?
my DS school are using the letterland program - it is a phonetic based (i.e. they don't learn a,b,c they learn ah, beh, cah, etc) and each of the letters has a character (clever cat, annie apple etc). We love this program, and they have the basic beginners level, and then also teach about blending sounds etc. It is an English program, but you can buy it here (it is expensive though, better to get it shipped from UK i think?). Our local library also has a lot of the readers which is good.
I just bought 2 of the computer programs from ebay which my kids are loving. We tried reading eggs and I didn't think much of it TBH, and although the concept is good (i.e. doing levels to unlock further games etc), the actual sounds and the way it was teaching them to read I didn't think was as good.
I think a lot of it is seeing what works for your child - mine has other learning problems (but is in a mainstream school), so this one really works for us, but reading eggs might work just as week. I think it helps if they are doing the same system at school and home though (you can't really just do phonetics at home if that isn't how they are doing it in class). Have you spoken to his teacher?
my DD who is 6 does reading eggs (at school and at home) and she LOVES it, she has improved so much with it and she wants to play it, i think if you go to their website you can do a 2 week trial for free
My DD is 5, just started Pre-primary, they started using REggs at school and she came home begging to 'play' so we logged on for the trial. She was a com pleat non reader 2 weeks ago, recognised most letters but the only words she had were her name and her sisters. Now she knows the phonics for every letter, knows each in upper and lower case, can sound out 3 and 4 letter words and is working out early reader books. It may just be coincidence, and she was ready now but we have been stunned at the leap on... Dont know where we will find the money to subscribe, but she will be devastated if we cant.
DD has been using reading eggs since she started school. We were given a trial run for it at the beginning of prep - she loved it from the start. I ended up subscribing her for 6 months or something and at the end of that she could use her school login details to continue.
She is still using it at school in grade one - she still really enjoys it and I'm happy with the way it progresses as she is learning to read and solidifying what she's learning at school with her the blends and different sound combinations.
Her school used letterland too - which is an amazing program.
Just started using Reading eggs, DD1 (3 1/2) has been 'playing' it for three days and can already recognise more letters (she knew o and I ) now she can spell the words at an am and about 10 letters. we have the 14 day free trial at the moment but i think we will buy it.
You can google search for some more codes for reading eggs and extend the free trial.
My Son started 'playing' reading eggs 2 months ago. He absolutely LOVES it. He's reading 8-10 words sentences where as he only recognised a few words at the beginning (his name, Mummy, Daddy, his sisters name etc).
I know there is an english program with reading, spelling and maths incorporated. It's a little cheaper too. I'll see if I can find the website for you.
