Button batteries - a little-known risk to small children
Small coin-sized lithium batteries, also known as button batteries, are a little-known risk to small children.
If a button battery gets stuck in a child’s throat, it can burn through the child’s oesophagus within 2 hours and cause severe internal injuries and death. Four Aussie kids each week on average go to emergency departments with button battery-related injuries.
We, Kidsafe & Energizer have launched The Battery Controlled campaign to help make parents aware of the dangers of kids swallowing these small batteries.
