    Transitioning to a bed

Miss 2 yo will be moving into a bed soon.

If you have done this before- what worked? What didn't work?

She's already pretty excited about the bed- kept telling me to go back to the shop to pick it up etc

With DD1 she slept on the mattress on the floor when we moved here until we bought her bed.
Never had an issue with her going into it, only ever fallen out once.

DD2 we were given a toddler bed, we just swapped her mattress over. Took a couple of days to get 100% used to it but loves it now.

Has your cot got removable sides? When we converted the cot into the bed, DD thought it was the best. She didn't like being confined in the cot so she was easy to transition. For the first few nights we put pillows on the floor in case she fell out.

Transitioning from the converted cot to the bed she's in now was even less of a big deal.

We did a 2 week driving holiday when ds1 turned 2 and didn't want to pay for the hire of a portacot so just put ds into single bed while away and he went into his single bed when we got home. Ds only fell out once while we were away so we didn't even bother with the bed rail that I'd bought he's only fallen out about 3 times.

We bought a bed rail from target it can be 30cm long and can extend to 90cm or maybe longer. Anyway we use the smaller size and have it near his head but enough room so he can hold onto the bed head to climb in and out.

    Transitioning to a bed

My boys take their woobies, their little toy Mickey mouse to bed. We make them a small drink and have their star each which plays music on the side of their beds with them.
Also we got character doona covers if I put a generic one on they very much do not like it. Having their favourite characters on their bed gets them all excited to get into bed. We also put a baby gate up on the bedroom door frame one do they cannot wander about. When they first went into beds they took so much with them a handful of cars, stuff teddies and just other bits and pieces now just the two things.
We also bought the character toddler beds which the kids loved ds1 didn't want to give up lightning McQueen bed when I decided to get them singles.

I didn't bother with a bed rail, if you think she will need one then i'd get it but personally DD1 fell out the first night and i think once since and we've been here 2 years.

We just changed ds who is 2 and a half, and have had no problems. However when he was just under 2 we tried, by converting his cot to a bed, and it didn't take. He was wandering out all night, and after a couple of days would end up in his portacot so he would sleep. We decided to wait a bit longer.
This time we tried it has been a breeze. We had decided to have the cot stay in the and have them both set up at the same time. We have a bed rail, so to get out of bed he has to climb down the bottom. He doesn't even climb out! He did for the second day or so but seems to have forgotten he can get out, and hasn't battered an eyelid at his cot. He takes his teddies to bed, and now a couple of toys as well and we put a red doona cover on with lots of cars which he loves.
    Good luck

Umm, well, we bought a bed and sheets etc, we assembled it all, and we put him in there one night.

The first night was kind of rough.

The second night was a little rough.

After that, he was basically fine.

    That's it.

We intended to do it at 12 months old, but then didn't actually get around to it until he was around 18 months.

I know it's not always that straightforward, but for DS1, it was really drama-free.
