2 year old having endoscopy for suspected Allergic Esophagitis
Has anyones child had an endoscopy before?
How did your child respond to the general anaesthetic?
Was your child in pain when they woke up?
What was your treatment plan if they did diagnose esophagitis in your child?
did they grow out of it?
Cant answer all your Q's but Jens miss J just went under for gromets and she had no side effects at all from being put under. she wasnt grogy or anything
About 50% of children wake up from an anesthetic somewhat grumpy. They often appear to be having a tantrum but it is just anesthetic and it only lasts a short time. So if they wake screaming/crying/distressed, it doesn't necessarily mean they are in pain but is the medication.
The anesthetic they get for this is only very light. They are typically being discharged within the hour. As soon as they are awake enough, they are offered drink and food.
Endoscopy is typically a painless procedure. Occassionally, the patients wake with a sore throat if it is a gastroscopy (top end) or wind cramps if it is a colonoscopy (bottom end).
From a mummy point of view: My daughter had a gastroscopy to remove a coin she had swallowed and became imbedded in her tummy.
Having seen more patients than I can count be anesthetized (including many children) and being fully prepared, I still flinched a little when DD had her gastroscopy last year.
From a recovery point of view, DD took a little longer than I would have liked to wake up. I was called to recovery pretty quickly but she was still asleep. She didn't respond to my normal tricks to get people to wake up. But when she DID wake up, she literally jumped into my arms.
DD didn't want anything to eat or drink although accepted an icey pole until she realised that they wanted her to eat it there and not take it home! I did get her to drink some apple juice. She just didn't want to eat there. Knowing the staff working that day and them knowing I'm a nurse (and having worked with many of them before), they let me take DD home pretty quickly. On the way out we stopped at the gift shop to buy a balloon and then a quick stop at Macca's where she asked for a Happy Meal and devoured the ENTIRE thing within 15 minutes before promptly falling asleep in the car.
She sounded hoarse for a few days but that was due to the size of the coin they removed.
Hope that helps. If there is anything else you want to ask, feel free
