    Coughing and reflux

DS has reflux and chucks multiple times after every feed. He now as a cough, and i am wondering if has breathed in some of the regurgitated milk. He is only taking in breastmilk. Just wondering if this would be likely, and if there is anything special i should be doing. We do positioning as much as possible with his head up.

It would be highly unlikely he has aspirated milk. Is the cough dry or moist? I remember when I had reflux when pregnant I always felt the need to cough and it seemed to relieve the reflux for about five seconds. He could also just have a slight cold as well.

At work the other day we were talking about new research (I was working in special care nursery) and it showed that in fact a lot of babies have milk in their lungs when biopsies are done. It showed that there must be alone sort of natural ability for bubs to be able handle some aspirated. Interesting. I would watch your son closely and if he looks like he is having to work harder to breath or coughing a lot I'd get him checked out.

One of the common symptoms of reflux is cough, it's because their throat is all irritated by the acid. Ds had it and was all husky too. But if you are worried get it checked though.

Thanks. it is more of a wet cough, and sometimes follows a vomitting session. it's not constant but doesn;t seem to be a 'cold' cough. I will just jkeep an eye on him.

    Interesting research Tegam,

i haven't had any allergy issues.

My dd (2 years old now) reacted when i drank milk as a young baby (up to 6 months) but was ok later. She may have had reactions to yogurt in first 12 months but outgrew them. She doesn't seem to have any food allergies now.

Their Dad has asthma and had eczema as a child. His family have a few different allergies, but none are serious (no epi pens needed). they just avoid triggers as much as possible.

My son has dry skin- not sure if it is eczema. maybe i should get it checked out...

DS still has the cough, it is just as wet. He is much better sitting up than laying down, especially at night. i took him to the dr last week and he checked his chest and said it was fine. Also got him to check his skin and the dr just suggested using moisturiser like QV or similar. His skin is quite dry especially on his face and arms, but has been getting better with the QV cream.

So, not sure whether i take him back to the dr or not. I guess i am wondering if it is an asthma cough, or something else. (DH had asthma and excema as a kid). We are managing it, but it is tiring for both of us and i wonder if there is something i am missing.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

    thanks
